    1. Is it too late to buy this, meaning will I buy this and then 2 months later it will not run newer games anymore? If not approx. how many years could I get out of it before games start to chug in framerate.

    2. Do you think I would be able to get a bargain of 1000$ for it without tax or not a chance? If not how much of a bargain would be most reasonably easy? If so do you have any haggling tips with gateway?

    Thanks in advance.

The bestbuy model is really nice too, it goes on sale all of the time for $1,249.99. You can tell gateway you want the P172s fx for that price, it may work.

to partially answer your question...do you currently own a desktop computer with an 8800 or higher video card?

and this will run all the games, it's just a matter of how high the detail you can get away with.....

and you can always TRY to bargain..all they can do is tell you no.
really don't think your going to get a 172s fx for 1k anywhere buy maybe ebay.

I have a desktop with an ati x1900 and as long as the games run. Right now they should at least run on medium but 2-3 years from now Im hoping they can just run at a reasonable framerate no matter how low the settings must go. I would love to have a bargain because I remember someone stating that he got a 1999$ laptop from gateway for 1599$ with no tax.

edit: this first statement is not entirely true. i checked 3dmark and it seems that there are 2 users higher than the top 8800m gts card. but then, this is a mobile card
well, then your gateway will crush your x1900 video card in all test.

and can run "most" games at a high detail with good frame rate.

and not sure about the 1999 lappy, but anything is possible... :)

I'd wait for the price to drop again or get a p6860 from best buy. It's only 1250$ and comes with a free game.

I read some people getting 200$ off by talking to a sales rep, but I have no experience with that. It went back up to 1400$ a few days ago so it's really only 100$ off. Here's a 75$ off coupon if you decide to go with the 172s fx. AFF08Q2

    Edit:
I think it'll last for quite a bit. I haven't seen many games coming out in the future that looks like the next Crysis.

if your not in a hurry, wait a few more months and the price on it will most likely come down because of the new intel platform thats gunna come out.

Yup! Nvidia just announced their 9m series as well. I'd just get it now though. Technology is constantly moving ahead. Nothing is future proof.

Im not in a hurry but technology is... if you know what I mean. I want it to be as some call "future proof" I just want to run recent games decently for at least the next 2-3-4 years or so.

All I know is its 256, and VERY loud, sounds like a generator when I play games. So can anyone answer if this laptop will last at least 2-3-4 years running games on even the lowest settings as long as the framerate is playable???

    this laptop runs all games.

and it's the cheapest one with a high end video card. and a very good performer on games. one of the best if not the best in it's price range.

so if your trying to future proof your self, then buy a sager or a clevo. price starting at 2k and up to about 5k.

but for 1350.00 and you take care of it..it should last you a few good years.

bottom line. no one knows how long this line will last since this line only just came out. so no one in these forums can answer that truthfully. we are the first gen buyer of this model or series.....

I would say buy it I was able to get $153 dollars off just try and make them think you are not satisfied. I told them I might go check out other brands and she took off all of that money it went from $1,528.97 to $1375.34 say you have a $75 dollar coupon and you might still check other things out
