Here's the three main things I'm wondering concerning the P-7811:

    1. Is there anyone who has had a perfectly functioning P-7811 since within a week of it's original release?

    2. Is there anyone who has experienced any serious problems with the newer "serial P2888" version of the P-7811 with the updated bios?

    3. If I were to get a perfectly functioning P-7811, is there a possibility that it will eventually regress towards having all the same problems as the faulty P-7811's? (this is pretty much the basis for question 1)

    1) Yes. My laptop was made late July, the laptop was released @ BB early August.

    2) Yes, all I can tell is that the 2888 is just a bios update for raid, but the computer remains the same as the older batch.

    3) I cannot tell the future...Technology is unpredictable.

    1. Me

    2. See 1.

    3. No one can ever answer that question honestly but usually when there problems with a machine, there right off the bat, atleast major ones .

    1. Yep, I'm another happy owner with a "perfect" 7811.

    2. Bought mine before the guys in BB knew they'd been released (had to tell them BB online said store had 3 in stock), so as above this doesn't really pertain to me.

    3. Who knows? This thing could go crash bang sis boom bah any second, like anything made by man (entropy exists!), but WILL it? Not statistically likely; most component failures occur within the first 24 hours of use or not for years.

1 perfect if you don't abuse it.(perfect screen, perfect key, only freeze once in NSF11,and never encountered again. Now I can play it and Mass effect as long as I like, with the GPU temperature around 70C)
2 mine is with .05 bios, but have already successfully updated to .08. Everything is fine with it.
3 I don't know, but so far so good. If you use it carefully, i think it will serve you for a long time( as far as you want to change)

Don't have the new one, but just chiming in to say that it's true that defects usually make themselves known very quickly. You should be able to pressure test your machine plenty in 14 days to find out if you've got a good one.

Thanks guys...I'm planning on buying the P-7811 this Saturday and my dad keeps saying, "just make sure you're getting something reliable" (I'm using his credit card) so naturally I want to be as sure as possible that I'm making the right decision. I was checking out BestBuy.com and it has a 4.3/5 out of 76 reviews so I think the odds are in my favor. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

-btw...is Best buy still having a sale on these things? It says $1299 on the website but I'm not sure if they just haven't updated it yet.

I think I saw it yesterday at Best Buy for $1249.99 still. That '4' could have been a '9' though. I had Lasik about a week ago. Eyes are still adjusting

I bought mine the first day of the original sale. I have the older S/N. I've had zero issues other then Gateway being a bit silly about the new bios which I'm now running.

Most electronics follow the "infant mortality" rule. If it is going to fail it's either going to fail very quickly from a defect or last a very long time and die of old age. You are usually safe within the 14 day return window and several people have even gotten them swapped in the 30 day window.

if its tagged $1449 again in store tell them you want to price match the online price of $1299, they'll do it.

If you get a good one this laptop is reliable.

If you get one with lockups, ghosting of the screen or other issues its not reliable :)

I would say go for it. Its a great laptop, and if you are unlucky enough to get a turd just exchange it within the 14 days. Use your 14 days wisely, and the first few days run every game, benchmark, and stress test that you can to make sure it works/performs exactly how you want it.

Well I was in the area today so I stopped by...they had one available, but it was an open box return :nah:

Anyway the guy said they are restocking on Sunday night/Saturday morning. In a way this is probably for the best...the entire new shipment will probably have the updated bios.
