We'll I decided to take my other 172S FX apart and redo the thermal paste on the cpu, north bridge and gpu.I also lapped the heatsinks.

    Here's the results:

    X9000 oc'd 3.0 ghz, GPU oc'd : 11,186
    http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=6991756

    X9000 non oc'd 2.8 ghz, GPU non oc'd : 9,137
    http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=6990798

As I noticed with my other machine. For extreme overclocking the cooling needs tweaked with new fans and possibly heatsinks.
But, for a sub-$2k gaming notebook. I think Gateway has one of the best machines, IMHO.

Very nice score, haven't seen many of these babies breaking 10k much less 11k. Hell 11k tops the 8800gtx and many desktop cards at least stock (based on other reports i've read around here) even factoring in your overclocked cpu.
What did you have your gpu clocked at for that test and how did the temps look after you did some work on the cooling?

I just bought a Gateway P-6860FX at Best Buy last night. Stock it scored 7414 with 3dmark2006. Overall it seems to be a very nice laptop for $1249 considering I was looking at spending $2500 on something else with almost the same specs.

I just wish it had a faster CPU and hard drive. I found a recertified 160GB 7200 hard drive on geeks.com for $65 so I will install that and try to load XP on it. :D

    http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=ST9160823AS-R&cat=HDD

I am curious about the x9000 processor you installed. The default processor in my laptop (T5550 1.83 GHz) has a fsb of 667 and if I'm not mistaken the x9000 processor is a 800 fsb? Does anyone know what speeds (fsb) the motherboard will handle - I assume 667 and 800 ? Also, what socket is on the motherboard because I thought the T5550 was a socket M and the x9000 a socket P? I'm kinda a newbie when it comes to intel processors - I usually use AMD processors and have been out of the loop for awhile with Intel. I would like to upgrade my processor at some point so any tips on this would be appreciated.

Also, has anyone tried overclocking the stock system and if so can you provide info on what you overclocked and how?

    Craig

The FX series can use any socket P cpu and it handles both 667 and 800 fsb.
Mine came with a T5750 (667fsb) and I upgraded to the X9000 (800fsb) with no problems.
Only cpu's that are unlocked can be overclocked "extreme editions"

ROFL! You updated your sig quick! lol

Go for XP if you're gunning for scores. You tend to score higher with XP.

Also, the 160 GB 7200 will be slower than the 320 5400 GB in the 6860FX, save yourself the $$.

yeah, i dont mess around with that. gotta give people they're props you know.

you didn't see my thread on the hitatchi 7200 rpm vs the 160 samsung 5400 rpm drive.... the samsung beat it in just about every test but maybe 2. 1 having to do with moving an 8 meg file..and that was suspect. lol and the other was the 3 tenths of a millsecond difference in speed. and here i thought the 7200's we're smoking the 5400's, but hp knew something when they went with samsung drives... hahahaha. i took my 7200 back the next day

I think my notebook is close to it's limits with overclocking with stock air cooling. I think I can hit 11,200 with a minor increase and keep stable. But, going over that I don't know if it can. If it can. It won't be much over 11,200.

Johnksss, what do you think with your overclocking experience?

i think you can do it!. i didn't even think we could get to 11k till killeroverload said he thought it was possible. so we went back to the drawing board to get that 11k, then the 11.1 k and now we have you, so get hat 11.2k! us over clockers are with you all the way! i have faith and i know you can do it.

    Johnksss and all overclockers,

I just had a thought. I remember while running 3dmark. My gpu fan doesn't rpm up till the very end of benchmarking. So, it makes me wonder how heat is making it unstable? Now, I'm thinkng maybe I just don't have enough voltage to run the gpu at those speeds to keep it stable?

    How are your fans running?

I think i'll call Gateway tomarrow to see if they can shed some light on this.

im thinking it's more the driver. the cards are set to 115c and mine gets no where near that. the driver shuts down first. i run a hwmonitor & gpu z in the back ground to watch for temp changes and gpu downclocking. now when the screens change you can see the monitors for a brief second each time. and my temps have never gotten above 75c. but this is what i have been seeing. unless there is a sooner cut off some where.....

This is all very exciting :).

Just finished my exams yesterday so i'll be back benching soon (need to find a air conditioning unit ;) ).

When i'm back on it i'll be making a thread anyway. I am guessing that you guy's are using lod and other tweaks while benching?

Me neither. I did notice from web link killeroverload posted, that using it you can cheat by adjusting the lod. Well, I don't need to cheat to do mine. I'll most likely will just delete it.

Some1 please tell me the differences in points in 3DMark06 and in games between these CPUs:
    -X7900 vs X9000
    -T7500 vs T7700 vs T9300

And do the Merom CPUs support good VGA OC like the Penryn CPUs do?

you would have to go on http://www.futuremark.com
and check it out... think i seen someone with some fairly decent scores with a t7700.
