    Hi all,

I'm just curious and using the basic free version of 3dmax06 and trying to get a comparison with other people who have gateway 6860s to see where mine stands. I've never used 3dmark before, so I have no idea how I should set it up with resolution and all that.

I had it set at 1280x800 and just ran it after I downloaded it, so with MSN open and stuff. Basically, how I'd play a game. I just got the computer and the only thing I did was updated the driver using the guide in this Gateway forum to the 177.41 i think it was. Actually, just looking at my device manager, maybe the driver didn't sit or fully install because it says "Driver version: 7.15.11.6746". Which is 167.46, right?

Well, looks like i'll have to get the new drivers again.

But the score I got with 3dmark was only 4867 3DMarks, which sounds low anyhow. I'll try it out with the new driver and tell you how it goes though.

So, what are the settings to use and the average results for a 6860 person?

    Thanks so much!

    ...

So there are no settings to adjust in the trial version. Oops.

But I did have the stock driver installed still, I messed up when I was installing and didn't get the right driver. So I updated to the 177.41 following the guide, rebooted, closed MSN and some other little programs and ran the test again.

    Got a result of 6885 3dmarks!

I'm gonna open up the couple programs I usually have running when playing games and general computing and run it again and hopefully that will give a good indication of if the drivers are helping completely, or if the programs really blunt the results. Also, there was one test, test 2 I think, which ran at 0-1 FPS the whole time. That must be some monster program! Probably very CPU intensive since it was outside in a desert setting and there were tons of little things moving around and exploding.

Seems like a nice driver tho! I'll make sure to link to the guide since its not stickied. :)

    Thanks!

Here's the link to the other thread about updating your driver.

Opened the programs I had for the first test: Windows Live Messenger (MSN) and ObjectDock and ran the test and got results of 6911 3dmarks. This program is touchy I see. But still you can see that from this very bad and entirely non scientific test, the drivers do seem a ton better.

Now to close ObjectDock and try again. Btw, objectdock on a 64bit machine is pretty lame. I hope they can update soon, I think i'll uninstall it till then. Its great on my XP desktop though. :)

    Cheers!

The point is... you really should update to the new drivers! I closed ObjectDock and the results were similar as with it open.

The drivers just provide a huge boost to this benchmark program. I'll leave it up to someone else to decide if this program is a good measure of gaming performance.

Seems like I forgot the link last post also. Here is the link to the thread about driver update to 177.41 using the modified inf file:

Thanks to iaMtHeAnimaL for the guide, and johnksss for the link to the modified inf file on page 5. Here's a direct link to the post with the inf I used that installed without a hitch: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3554936&postcount=46

    Thanks all!

What GPU/Memory clock setting do you reccommend if I wan't to pull the max out from my 8800M GTS? (Stable and safe clocks ofc)

I have no idea, I don't plan to OC because I it doesn't seem to need anything in my opinion.

Anyone else got advice for DRevan?

    Cheers!

You could start at 575/875 and work your way up to 600/900 or higher or lower it just really depends on stability .i can run 600/900 all day long except for one game which flakes out on me no clue why (screen shuts off ) so i just uninstalled it anyhow cause i had beaten it a couple times already :) my GPU never gets any hotter at those clocks either. johnkss and others have gone way higher then the clocks im even recommending just depends how brave you are .
