    I have a new receiver and have this laptop setup threw hdmi and i am wondering why doesnt it output to 5.1 or even 7.1.. it doesnt even enable my center speakers with front.. i only see 2 channel available in properties threw hdmi. should i update the drivers?

    I think you need the adapter(yj adapter?) and it has to go through the headphone port.

    Your right though, it should be outputting 5.1 or 7.1 just fine through HDMI.

    I think it is because there is no dedicated sound chip or software.

    No it's because the 6831 and 6860 only have HDMI v1.2 ports (unlike the 7811 which has v1.3a). To carry full 5.1 or 7.1 audio over HDMI you need at least v1.3. I'm afraid v1.2 is limited to 2 channel audio.

    The only way around it is to run optical S/PDIF out of the headphone socket with a mini-TOSLink connector.
