Avoid the Samsung's. I had 2 of them in RAID 0 before the WDs. They were noisy, slow and hot.

if its just for extra storage they will be fine, its just that the samsungs have 3 platters, meaning less density, meaning worse performance.

Even for additional storage I would avoid at all costs. Trust me a had two of them! Just refuse the delivery and order a WD instead.

I'm still waiting for the Seagate 7200.4's. Wonder how 2 of them in RAID 0 will perform *drools*

The WD5000BEVT is 2 platter. WD have not announced a 500GB 7200rpm disk yet. Seagate's 7200rpm disk (7200.4) is rumoured to be out mid December according to this.

    iaTa,

do you know if that 114.99 price on the WD 500gb drive is going to stay that way for a while or is it a holiday price?

If anything it's going to continue to drop but this Seagate with 15% off and $1.99 shipping is a pretty good deal.

I'm good to you guys :)

iaTa - Thanks for your PM (and sorry for not getting back to you). My WD 500 is on my way (very excited). I remember just a few months ago considering a 320GB external drive (to rip apart for internal use) for the same price as the WD I am getting; makes me really glad that I waited..

iata that seagate is the same one that newegg has for 99$ + free shipping. And yes these 500GB are not good for gaming and stuff like that, but its fine for storage tho. I personally have external 1TB, but it is getting full (only 140GB left), so i might get another external 1-2TB Or i might just wait till 500GB 7200rmp comes out and i'll get 2 of them in raid. So 1TB lappy and 1TB external... :)

    Looks like Seagate 7200rpm 500GB may be delayed until Q1 2009 :(
