The new 6860 FX soon available at Best Buy, what are the differences between the older model the 6831 FX? Have they announced a release date for the 6860 FX?

Its supposed to release around mid april . The differences are 4 gigs of ram instead of 3 gigs A new processor 1.83ghz instead of 1.6 and 320 gig HD either in 2 160gig 7200 rpm HDs or 1 320gig no ones sure yet and all of this is still speculation so take it with a grain of salt till something official gets posted .

I'm still waiting to see an official announcement. A Google search for 6860FX yields only five results, all from forums.

Some of the Best Buy employees have been posting that it might be a 320 gb hard drive, and talking from the reps, they said that there were to be two 160 gig 7200 rpm drives so we're just assuming that is what will be in the next Gateway model for Best Buy.

So we're just assuming since Gateway is releasing the P172X Fx with two 160 gig 7200 rpm drives that the one from Best Buy will have the same hard drive configuration. In short no one really knows until an official announcement is called or when it starts to appear in the Best Buy stores.

The P-172s fx will have a 160gb hard drive also but it is the faster 7200rpm vs. the 5400rmp

The P-172x fx will have 2 160rpm hard drives, the point is Gateway is trying to keep their price point down on the starting models, to be more competitive.

I am not sure, Gateway will start their preorders on the 17th, shipping two weeks later, so around then I guess.

When you say Gateway will start preorders, that means for BB right?

Im thinking that the 6860 might hit retail before theres the option on gateways site . There are no more 6831s to order and from the looks of it gateway wont make anymore available till the new model hits . that would be along time for bestbuy to go without some model of theres available at a retail level.

I meant Gateway.com. If we go by history, Best Buy will have their model first I bet.

Well, this sounds like a nice step up for the same price. A good buy is now an even better buy (good thing I didn't say best buy).

Are they taking anything out of the older model to make the newer model fit the cost?

Probably not since the stuff they had in the previous models is cheaper now so they wouldnt technically be loosing anything if they do leave it the way it was.. UNLESS they want a higher profit margin then its possible..

The only think I hear from my Gateway Rep is the Gateway.com model P-172s fx that is going to replace the P171s fx will use the fingerprint reader and the bluetooth, that will lower its cost by $200.00 makeing it $1,399.99

In the Best Buy ad that came in the newspaper today (Florida) the 6860 FX was only $1249.

got my 6860 the other day and so far so good... but, I found that the CD ROM is making some very loud and "bad" noises....

I've already gone through 3 of these types of laptops trying to find one without issues (the others had bad issues with the right speaker or touch pad buttons).

Anyway... this one doesn't have the speaker or touch button issues so I'd really just prefer to swap the CD-ROM... does anyone know how to remove the CD on the 6860 FX?... I'm assuming and hoping that it's just a couple of screws off the bottom and it will slide out??

Of course I would think the removal would be the same as the 6831 if anyone knows hows to do that.

    Thanks.
