Yea, I was checking out the floor model a few times...I just wish it had the higher res screen as the cpu is easy to upgrade.

That $1599 deal for it's big brother is pretty sweet as well!

Well, at least you guys get to choose since you're in US.

Canadians such as myself only have the option of getting it from BestBuy.

And I lucked out in getting one before what seems like a decision to discontinue it by BB.

It looks like BB will be getting some in the warehouse on the eighth, so you may be able to get one then. Go in on the eighth and tell the sales employee you want to "CF" the laptop. If they don't know what you mean, talk to someone else. :D

I've heard that the P-6831 FX will be discontinued soon. Maybe it's sold out! I don't know if there is any truth to this rumor though. It's still listed as "Backordered" and there aren't many Best Buy stores that have one to sell.

I work for Best Buy- The end of stock date is sometime in May for us.

Keep in mind, the website stock level checker says it is not available if there is only 1 at the store. My store has had 1 for a while. If you guys want me to check your individual store I can..just PM me the store#'s you want me to check and I'll post from work the next time I am in. Or, you can call the store and ask.

Huh, odd. D12 of T33 shows 3-8. Maybe it's different in each territory or district. Check RSS next time you work, make sure it wasn't moved up or something.

After I finally found the last one in Ohio (lucky me, only a 1 hour drive from me), I called a couple of stores around me who a few days earlier said they could order me one (2-3 week wait) with no problems, only to be told they can't even order me one anymore.

Interesting - I wonder just how limited our P6831s will be...

Not that I am worried about support, given that the P171 FX series is identical in every way, and isn't even released yet; I would just be surprised if Gateway really did nix this specific model after only 3 months. Then again, think about how many must have sold in those 3 months....

Gateway probably used Best Buy to get their new "Gaming" name out there, a marketing decision.

Well, it certainly worked. Unless all of our laptops start flling apart in the next few months, Gateway has one heck of a foothold. They have really impressed me so far. Among other things, it is SO nice to have a real Windows disk; i hate the idea that makers are so cheap that they wont even include that. Pair that disk with the driver and application disk, and reinstallation is never a worry.

Real enough - it is labeled as the Operating System disk, and didn't require any silly extra disk burning (no premade recovery ISOs). I am sure the disk is BIOS locked to a gateway, but it does make an absolutely clean Vista install. That is as close to a real Vista disk as i need...

Do you maybe know if the recovery partition must be D?

Because I changed it to another letter. Its just in the way...
Actually I want to format it so badly.

I did that on another Gateway Laptop I had, and to be honest, I changed it back. The recovery only takes up about 4-5gb, and its a whole lot easier to reload your os if you need too. I did make a sys recover disk, and that works well too, as long as you don't lose it. :)

To be honest, I am not sure what the recovery partition does. As long as you burn the application and driver disk first, you will have no problem completely reinstalling vista. Now, I guess you should check with someone else first; while i doubt it, i guess there is the possibility that the install disk uses the partition... hmm.. I guess i need to do more research on that before i can say to remove it..

Yeah, im gonna keep it for the time. Changed it to R partition :)

The laptop came with an original Gateway Vista recovery dvd tho. Its printed on the disc that it can be used to restore the installation when needed.

On a side note: the bloatware isnt so bad, I like the penguins game lol

Oh, and I changed the screen to 1680x1050.
The lightbleed at the bottom is somehow the lid itself, not the screen. The washed out viewing angles are gone though. Ill try to post a thread with pics tomorrow.

You can use a freeware program called pcdecrapifier, you run it it gives you a list of the bloatware on your system, you check what you want uninstalled, and it works. I would uninstall any anti-virus manually.

I want this laptop but I was waiting around for the next Best Buy sale. One of the local Best Buy stores by me has it in stock and we are still able to order it online with 1-2 week backorder. Is it foolish to wait and see if this laptop wil go on sale again? Any other Best Buy employees seeing a "end of stock date."

Got mine at bestbuy today they got a shipment of 2 in yesterday and one was already gone when i got there. very nice machine and ive had xps`s and alienware 9750. the thing feels so lite to me and its actually comfortable as hell on my lap and the screen on the one i got was much better then the display i had seen. For the price anyone would have to be crazy not to snag one of these badboys . i installed xp so far after doing all the backup stuff that was suggested first and other then the lack of sound its running awsome
im going to throw vista on another partition now and start fartin around with that next the only thing i havent figured out how to fix is my restore partition {which i just wanted to keep on there for the time being} became my C:drive when im in windows and my windows drive is D: but i cant change the drive letter in adminstrative tools cause it says it cant change the bootsector or something along those lines .

Best Buy online shows the 6831 as "IN STOCK" this morning. Last night is was Backordered status.

I ordered mine up for shipment express after calling 10 BBs in the area. Cheaper than driving around hoping to find one.

Also, a few of them offered to sell me a floor model at 10% off. $140 for unknown abuse is not a good deal.

For those who are waiting for a sale, DON'T. All of the stores were amazed at the number of calls for this item and how popular it is. Buy one and have fun!

I did the same, except for the Blu-Ray. I'm still stuck on whether or not to add the WUXGA (1920x1200) screen and Blu-Ray player now, wait for both until later, or add the LCD now and add a Blu-Ray Burner later.

As of 03/19/08, the laptop is showing available at 3/4 of the stores in the San Diego, CA area.
