    Clean install of Vista.
    Installed XP Pro SP3.
Installed driver pack from the XP thread.

There is no audio device to allow me to update drivers. Searched the forum for a solution, but I seem to be the only one.

I tried using the Gateway recovery disk to re-install the Sigmatel audio, but I get an error message saying the setup is already running.

I'm sure I've done something wrong since many of you already have this solved. Any advice is appreciated.

Service Pack 3 will hose the driver installation. I removed it and the driver installation ran just fine. Still don't have an audio device showing though.

Unfortunately, these instructions do not help. I posted the problem on that blog so perhaps someone will be able to help. Thanks anyway!

Merely removing SP3 won't work, try re-installing with just SP2.

All fixed up. Sound is great in XP with no apparent R / L difference. Just as good as in Vista. The key was a clean install on XP SP2, then driver build per linky above. You can "upgrade" to XP SP3 after everything is installed and setup.

    Thanks !!!

When I first got the 6831 and did a fresh install with XP, I had this same problem. I had already loaded a ton of programs and, like you, had to start all over with SP2.
