I went to the local Best Buy where they had a model out and I asked them if they were going to get anymore. They told me that they wouldn't get anymore and were willing to sell the laptop model for $1250... the screen doesn't have washed out look on the bottom, but I didn't purchase it since I really don't want to buy a floor model.

If this is true and Best Buy isn't going to get them anymore, should I go around to the other Best Buys who do have them in the box and see if I could get it for a discounted price or would they have to be "officially" discontinued?

Also, if there are any Best Buy employees out there, is there a updated fx model coming out? :)

This has been discussed in this thread as well:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=226441

If you can get a new in box one, I say go for it, even at $1,349. Chances are, you won't find many (if any). Personally, I think if I was getting a display I'd want at least their best sale price on the unit in the past, which is $1,199. 15-20% would be better, but I doubt you'll get it on this model. Just my .02 cents.

I also went to bestbuy a few weeks ago to ask about the P-6831FX. My friend works at bestbuy and he told me it was discontinued. He doesn't know if Gateway would be having another model to replace this one. Chances are they probably will due to the success from this one.

It went discontinued as of Saturday. Hopefully everyone who wants one will get one. PM me with your ZIP and I'll check area stores inventory for you tomorrow morning. I'm willing to bet we will get a replacement before too long, as this was an incredibly popular laptop. I know, I'm not only a salesman, but a customer too! :D

Alright, I have a decision to make! I have a bestbuy that is willing to give it to me new $1249.99 (100 dollars off) or get the P171X-FX for $1800 (tax and shipping included)

    My three options:
    Buy at Best Buy 1249.99

    Buy at Gateway 1800.00

    Don't buy and wait.

Not too sure what to do about this...

I think they may be updating the BB model to accomodate faster memory maybe? That or a Penryn Processor. The P series is supposed to be top of the line, and the 6000 is the retail model. Come to think of it, my money is on the next P-6XXX to be a penryn notebook but expect it to cost about $200-300 more.

I'd just get it now at Best Buy before it's gone for $1249. THE P171X-FX still hasn't shipped for those who ordered 6 weeks ago, plus I don't think it's worth another $550 for what you get (versus others earlier who were getting that model much cheaper).

I really hope that Gateway isn't going to make a much better P-6XXX laptop so soon, I would having my 3 week old P-6831FX lose its value so quickly.

I went ahead and got it... cost 1349.36 including taxes - I haven't opened it up yet. I'm one of those people who keeps thinking about the purchase until the last minute. ;)

As for making a better P-6XXX, they would either need to put a better CPU, or add the fingerprint reader, or slot dvd, or a battery that is inline with the laptop... unless they're going to put the P171s out on retail in Best Buy?

Montevina will probably be around either May or June (guessing), so that's another month or so, and probably add a couple extra months before the laptop carries the Montevina chipset... these are my speculations so take these with a grain of salt. :)

Doing a stock check on bestbuy.com, 3 of the 6 local stores show they have them in stock. Yesterday they had none.

When using the gateway website product finder, I get 2 stores showing in stock with the remaining 5 stores to call.

So Best Buy stores seems to be getting a few units in. Can any bestbuy worker recheck the P-6831FX in the computer and let us know if they see a discontinued date.

It looks like some stores are getting units in stock and we can still order online without any backorder delays. Hopefully a meeting of some sorts where the powers that be came together and decided not do discontinue the P-6831FX. Ask your friend to check again and let us know what he finds out.

BB as a whole recieved a rather large shipment recently, most stores have them instock. They are no longer listed as discontinued, which is odd, considering in mid April we get the replacement. :O

Who needs a 360? Crysis @ 145" looks phenominal. I tend to keep the rez at 720p, and it works magnificently. :D

The replacement is due to come in April? If I remember correctly, you work in BB. Any details on what the replacement is going to be? I don't think this question has been asked. Or has it?

T5550(which our floor model of the 6831 has, hmm.), 4GB, 320GB. No other info as yet. Probably preloaded with SP1.

Actually mines great, the brightness is phenomenal, plus having naitive 1080p at 147" with a 50 dollar 10k hour bulb is awesome. I have a 2.8 gain screen so its pretty bright.

I'm sure commercials are considerably brighter but loved mine and didn't have to worry about replacing 2-3000 hour bulbs every year for 100-500 a pop. The Screen brightness is MUCH better than it used to be, especially with the types of bulbs, reflectors, Fresnel's that are available now.

Plus the type of panel you have is a big deal too, certain panels have more types of Anti glare which reflects more light back and causes considerable light loss. I looked into purchasing A few commercial projectors, but the upkeep on them is just ridiculous with bulb life.

You could probably build a 15.4 1080p HDMI HCDP with 1:1 scaling projector now for like 500-600 bucks. I was one of the first on the forum to do it for gaming while everyone else was doing it for movies I usually get 1-2 PM's A day on mine, but I'm in need of a control board, then I'll be good to go =D

I liked it just as much as my 42" Vizio 1080p LCD TV, there was just something about gaming at 145"
