I have a 6831fx, running windows vista 64bit, with an upgraded processor to t7500. I use the drivers from the nvida driver thread posted here. I use an idt sound driver which is not the gateway driver. I use the lappy for all the usual stuff, but I also a heavy gamer. I play cod waw, cod4, cod2, and sof2.
I have zero problems with any of the games except cod5. When I bought the lappy it had xp on it, and drivers I don't remember. It would over heat on cod5 once in a while. No big deal, I took it apart, cleaned it, then I upgraded the os to vista, and no more troubles. That is until the power jack wore out. I got a new one and soldered it on to the usb board. I put the lappy back together and then I could run about 20 minutes before it would overheat. I am not sure at what temps it would overheat at, because it would give me the classic black screen and had to power it down to get it to boot again.
While I was testing it I checked the temps before it would shut down at it was at 94c on the gpu. But still ran and I assume once it got a bit hotter it would give the black screen.
So, I took it apart again, I got some arctic silver thermal paste this time and cleaned the heatsinks and started to do some more research on the problem. It does not seem to be too often you see this on the 6831's, but on the 7xxx series there is is threat after thread about it.
so, I did the rivatuner trick and forced constant performance, the gpu runs very cool when I do that. BUT, my cod waw frame rates drop from 80 to 40 so there is a huge performance hit. So, I also read to turn you power saving off in windows. I did that and a started to use vertical sync in the game to limit my fps to 60. at this point I put the rivatuner setting back to stock settings. I played cod waw for a over an hour this morning, no black screens. it ran fine BUT, I was running hwmonitor and my gpu at the end of an hour of gaming was 97c OUCH, thats hot.
so, my question is this, is there a way, undervolting perhaps to drop the performance just a bit to help with the temps and not doing the rivatuner fix? the rivatuner fix is just too much of a fps hit to live with.
I read up on undervolting the 7xxx lappys, but I don't think that would work the same on this one. Anyway, has anyone undervolted their 6831? I don't know how to do it and I would like some advice on this issue, whether it is worth it or not?
    Thanks,
    Ray

i dont know about the undervolting bit, have you considered a laptop cooler? i got one for $19 shipped after rebate and it helps to keep anything from blocking the vent and also helps blow cool air into the vents.

No, I use it on a table, I made some rear pads to help elevate it in the back. I never use it on my lap. Or rarely I should say. I am not going to use a cooler most likely

from your original post, it seems like you want to undervolt your GPU. If so, it requires a bit of fiddling with GPU bios ie. editing voltages in nbitor and then reflashing the new settings to your GPU. Check this thread for more info regarding GPU bios flashing:

if you are simply wanting to undervolt your CPU, programs such as RMclock or CPUgenie will easily help you accomplish this within Windows with minimal fuss.

Thanks Moto, I meant to say undervolt the gpu. I have seen that thread before, but was not sure how go about changing the gpu bios. I am not having much overheating trouble since I changed the thermal paste, but gaming on cod waw if about 92c on the gpu. I bit hot. I will also try Dox's new nvidia driver as well.
