I'm trying to upgrade to vista HPrem 64 bit to get my 4gb ram recognized, and the install fails at the part where you have to pick a hard drive. It wants a driver (sata controller, whatever) to use the HDD, and I'm assuming the one I have isn't 64bit compatible. Gateway confirmed this and said they don't have 64bit drivers availible yet. What are you using that works with 64bit?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give,

    Thomas

All the 64-bit drivers you need are availible for the 6831. Try doing your search again but looking for drivers for the p6860 fx. The 6860 came with Vista 64 loaded from the factory. The two are laptops are essentially just different configurations of the same systems.

I use 64-bit Vista and had no problems installing in both RAID and non-RAID configurations. You shouldn't need any S-ATA drivers. Does the version you are are trying to install have SP1 integrated?

    thanks for the replies...
I'll try the drivers for the similar model.. thanks warlordone

Yeah it had sp1. It gets to the screen showing my HDD's and partitions, and the "next" button is greyed out. It wants a driver to control the hdd. Didn't you have to provide one when you upgraded, iaMtHeAnimaL?

You need to set the drive to compatibility mode in the BIOS - I forget the exact term and I sold my 6831 so I can't check it.

This is a very common question that gets answered alot so you should be able to search out the answer.

I switched the sata controller from ACHI to "compatibility" in the bios, but no luck. I still get to the screen where I need to select a drive to install on, and the "next" button is greyed out. My drives and partitions are displayed, and my options are to "load a driver", or "advanced drive options."A search turned up a lot of good info about drivers that I might need if I can ever get past this screen, but I can't find anything about this problem.

Have you got the RAID controller enabled in the BIOS?

Have you tried the F6 method using this Intel 64-bit driver?
