Hello everyone, I just got the M-6850FX last night at best buy ($810 on clearance!), and i noticed in pics that the media center keys at the top should have an orange backlight. for you owners out there, are those light on all of the time? can they be toggled on/off? I am hoping mine is not defective because there is no light there.

last question, has anyone done the CPU upgrad on the 6850? is it as easy as the 6860?

    thanks in advance!

The blue function key and one of the F keys (I think in the lower numbers) will turn off a lights on the keyboard, including power indicators, hard drive access, media shortcuts, etc.

    Give it a shot.

    Fn+F1 will do the trick

Is the backlight feature on the M-152XL too? Seems odd that it wouldnt be, the chasis is the same for the M6850. I cant get mine to light up, Fn+F1 is not working.

Hmm. I would think it would be the same across the board on all current generation M and P series. Thats weird.

The non-FX versions light up in blue. And normally it's Fn+F1, and it should work even without drivers because I don't have the drivers on mine (not available for XP)... Maybe he means a BIOS upgrade?

    That said, mine's a 6831

if you have the same access panels on the 6850 as we do on the 6860, you should be able to upgrade the processor with ease. pop off 5 screws holding the conver over the cpu and memory sticks, remove the 5 heatpipe screws, turn the last screw to the left to unlock the cpu from the motherboard, and voila!

well my M-152XL isnt backlit either, so i guess that makes sense. stupid rep told me that if i did a factory restore the backlit would work...so i did it. and it doesnt work, it never worked since i got it i tried to tell him. oh well i was looking to format soon anyway.

    but http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...1205537513321&viewtype=Alternate View 1&h=387

Its the same method. I checked it out when I had my 6850fx.

And the keys on the 6850 are backlit. Well supposed to be lit, if they're not, then theres a defect.
EDIT: This may or may not be true. See below.

the lights on my power button and track pad are blue, unlike the orange on the 6860.

Hmm interesting. Maybe GW changed midyear or something to cut costs. I definitely know the one I had was backlit.

EDIT: I'm at Best Buy right now and the display model is not lit either. The buttons are painted with orange descriptors just as you said. Maybe I'm going crazy after all.

But the processor is just as easy to swap as on the 6860. Less than 10 screws and 10 minutes.
