My adapter is hissing, I didn't notice it much at first. I thought it may be because of the power it's drawing, but then began reading and saw mixed reviews.
My laptop is over a month old now, but should I call Gateway and ask?
Thanks!
-
from what i read around the forum, its nothing to be worried about. but i did chat with a gateway rep 2nd week after my purchase and the first time i heard the hissing noise. theyre sending me a replacement adapter as we speak/type. but i doubt it would eliminate the sound since some people who received their replacement adapter still has the hissing sound.
-
Is it 120W or 90W. Most of the 90Wt's hiss, but my 120W is silent...
-
Yes call up Gateway and ask for a replacement. The replacement will probably hiss as well so in anycase you will use that one as spare.
I asked for a replacement and it still hisses. Probably a normal issue.

Edit: On another note, when more people ask for a replacement, the higher ups at Gateway will soon be alerted by such losses in sending replacements they will look further into the issue. -
lol I thought you said "6860 Adapter Missing??"
-
-
They released a bunch of 6860's with 90W Power Bricks. The new ones have 120W Power Bricks. The 90W were known for hissing.
-
how can u tell what you got is 120W? tried to check mine and all i can see is input and output voltage
-
read the tag on the adapter
-
Says it on the sticker.
-
Its also in the Model Number ie-HP-OW120B13=120watt. But most of all its at the end of the Output line. It will say either 90W or 120W.
My 120watt is totally silent. -
According to gateway, all 172X FX models ship with 120 watt adapters. Mine hisses...
-
That's the 172X, not the 6860.
-
I know, I'm just saying in response to everyone who says that their 120 watt adapters don't hiss. Maybe the 172X has different power requirements but the hardware is pretty similar...
-
You know what's a good question. All you hissers, what Lot (batch number; IT IS NOT YOUR SERIAL#) did your AC adapter come from? Post your BATCH number.
My laptop's batch number is H175684. And it came with a AC adapter that failed on me.
I can find a Lot/batch number written for the AC-adapter itself though. -
Well, my new chocolate lab puppy chewed through mine! Perhaps I could tell Gateway it was because the adapter was hissing and he thought it was a cat
On a kind of related note - for those that have gotten replacement adapters, did you have to send in the old one? -
Looks to be 120 Watt if I read it correctly. I'll call end of the week.
Yes, do we have to send the old adapter in? -
Nope I didn't have to send in my old one; they just sent me a new one.
-
i must be stupid. cant even find that batch/lot no. you guys are talking about.im looking at the sticker on the under side of the adapter
-
on the adapter label you got :
output : 19V.......6.32A
use your calc: VA=Watts
hint 19*6.32=? -

I don't think it's a problem if you have to put it up to your ear to hear it... Your laptop will hiss too if you put it up to your ear.
-
Yeah, my adapter which I thought was not hissing does hiss if you put it up to your ear. But the noise doesn't sound suspicious, sounds like that electric noise if pass one of those public electric boxes in the street. A constant lil buzz noise, that seems normal.
-
Ok. Now that I ram it in my ear, I too, can hear the "transformer" buzz, but is certainly not loud enough for me to notice otherwise. Its loudest if you put your ear right next to where the LED indicator is on the output side. The weird thing is, the one for the VAIO is twice as hot, yet makes absolutely no noise.

Both my friend and myself bought a 6860FX back when BestBuy first got them and advertised them.
Both of our power bricks will at times hiss, sometimes a quietly and sometimes louder. I took mine back to the store and got a new one which had the exact same problem.
It doesn't always happen, seems to be tied to how hot it is and one the power setting as well, as I can change it from low power to high power and it'll cause it to stop. -
ok just found out that my adapter IS 120W.and its making the hissing sound. dammit

If you have to be really close to hear it, then it's not a problem.
-
Well I have Gateway P-173XL FX and I can hear the hiss clearly from 5 feet away with fans blowing in my room and the TV on. I have heard the hiss before and I recognize it, it's the tell tale sound of capacitors being over worked. It also getts really loud when I overclock this monster.
I traded in my Toshiba X205-SLi6 for the Gateway and the Toshiba had a 180W AC adapter. That Toshiba had capacitors that could really handle an overclock or heavy gaming and never made a sound. I wish realy wish Gateway would get thier act together and offer 180W AC adapters for at least the 17* FX series .
I wouldn't worry too much about it, nothing is going to explode or anything, but it will shorten the life of the capacitors. I would definatly get a back up AC adapter if you plan on keeping the notebook for a long time. -
And what adaptop are you thinking to get
I had a problem with my power supply capacitors, but i changed them with stronger ones and it works and it doesn't hiss any more and my PC works more stable. -
WOW?!?
You went in your power supply and changed the caps?? On your desktop or laptop? That's risky business... wow, are you an electrician or do you have a death wish... lol!
Gateway doesn't offer much and you have to make sure the adapter is compatble with the laptops power supply. I would just call Gateway and complain about the hiss to get a second 120W Gateway adapter. I don't think you can get a 3rd party adapter. -
-
Yes i changed them with 16v instead 12v that was making the problem.
sinc then my PC works just fine and still no problems. -
Anyone have any experience with this replacement supply for the P-6831/60FX?
Also, does anyone have the exact dimensions of the DC barrel plug? I may possibly have access to a power supply (19vdc @ 7.8A) that could work if I can get the correct connector. It depends on the minimum order requirements for an importer I work with.Attached Files:

After leaving my lappie running prime95 after I put some thermal, I noticed that the usual buzz noise from my AC-adapter was loud enough to hear without getting all up and personal. Was interesting because the adapter wasn't even hot as it made the noise; but it functioned all the same.
-
Mine hisses in high performance mode. Change it to balanced no hiss.
I also noticed that if I use the battery till its low then plug it in and keep using it until the bat is charged it will hiss in balanced mode. -
i thing that gateway has put a 120W PS and that the max output and thats what the lappy needs
that's why it hisses cause it almost almost at his max capacity
