I really want to replace my LCD since I can't stand the narrow viewing angle and the lower res. I've been reading and it seems like the LG 17" replacements are the way to go.

    My question is what's the difference with the different "lp171wu 1 tl a2" and "lp171wu 3 tl a2". There's the WU1, WU3 and some people mentioned A1, A2, etc.

Which one is the best for the gateway 6860 and will fit properly? Thanks!

I am not sure what the difference between those 2 panels are, but I am interested in performing the same mod. I have heard that I should just grab the panel out of the 7000 series as its a 1920x1200 panel and has a MUCH wider viewing angle. The only problem is, our video card is really matched to that resolution for gaming. To be honest tho, I really only play WoW and I don't see a real reason for me to even worry about the higher resolution as it's just WoW.....

I just want the viewing angle and screen real estate. It's annoying having to tilt the screen to get the correct brightness and color.

Thanks. I read through this thoroughly before posting. Unfortunately they didn't elaborate on which one is the best. The thread also veered off to talk about the 1440 displays instead of the 1920. Thanks though. :)

I'm still looking to see what the differences between the WU1 and WU3 model along with the TL/A2/A3/... before I go ahead to make the purchase on ebay.

Also becareful on ebay. Some sellers are advertising LP171WU1/3-compatible models and isn't selling that exact one. Be sure to ask before buying or else you'll get hit with a restocking fee probably!

Can we get some pictures of the back side and connectors for both the LG WUXGA and the AOU WXGA/WUXGA? Is it safe to assume they all use the same connection? Is this a standard connection for all LCD panels? If so, one option may be to look around at other laptop displays and see which one you like best in the store, then determine which it is and buy that panel (eBay, etc.).

When I swapped-out my WXGA for a WSXGA+ panel, I simply bought the higher-res panel in the same series from the same manufacturer, so I don't know if there is an industry standard for LCD connectors.

I get the impression it's not so much which will work (they may all work) as it is which one is the optimal solution for you. Frame rails shouldn't make a difference as the mounting holes should be standardized. There may be a difference in coatings (glare, polarization, contrast enhancement, etc.).

You have answers? I have questions...

I got a reply from one of the ebay sellers for the http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120375919225 item.

The compatible indicates that it's not the real LG but a "compatible" so becareful. He says that the LP171WU1(A4)(K5) isn't compatible with a Gateway P 6860 FX. Maybe he doesn't know what he's talking about?

SmartMicro finally replied and they said that the LP171WU3 TL should work. I just need to use my existing inverter. I bought this one from them http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350166666692 . I will have an extra 1440x900 (WXGA+) panel available if anyone is interested as a replacement. Send me a decent offer including $9.95 for 2-Day UPS shipping.

So i'm really confused. Mainly about the TL part. How does a 17" 1920x1200 wuxga cfl with the part number lp171wu1 differ from lp171wu1 TL ?

Also what's the difference between a lp171wu1 and an lp171wu3? I know the wu5 i think is led instead of cfl. Any other input?
