I just got my Gateway P-6860 FX a few days ago, and so far im not really impressed. But to get on with my question.. In another thread i saw someone post there heat at idle/surfing the web a lot lower then mine, and i cant figure out why. I took a screen shot of what mine are just surfing the web.

Why does mine run hotter? Are the fans always really loud? And why do oi hear a clicking noise coming from my laptop, is that normal? My old laptop didnt do that. And one last thing, my friend has the same exact laptop, but he gets 10 more fps then i do in CoD4 with the SAME setting/graphics and same drivers. But i have 64 bit and he has 32 bit. Could that b the reason? Any help at all would be great.

there's a guide to undervolting your pc on this forum. try doing that. i did it to my 6860 now its idle temps are ~38-40 for the cores(before was ~45). the gfx temp seems normal; mine is always 49-51 idle. Also i think i read a "clicking noise" means something bad. Sorry dont know much more but there does seem something wrong with your pc temps(the cores mainly).
Also i have a question for anyone who can answer; isnt that cpu voltage in the pic wierd? the highest voltage mine goes to is 1.2500V according to cpu rightmark program.

I think i will be returning this laptop and hopefully be getting a new 6860, or should i just ask for my money back and try to find a nicer laptop?

Well the reason you probably bought the 6860 is because you want to play the most demanding games without spending top dollars on a high end laptop. What the 6860 offers at its price cant be matched. But if your not on a budget then you could definitely find an even better laptop i guess.

The clicking noise is likely your hard drive. That's not a good sign.

I was afraid someone would say something like that. So lets see, processor runs to hot, HD makes clicking sound, power brick hisses and is REALLY hot.. anything else i should tell them so i can get a replacement?

dont know what program you used to get the temp but i know some are not THAT accurate. most people use HWMonitor. try it if it gives you any diff result.

    heres a link:
    http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

did u try propping up the back end of your laptop. a bottle cap of mineral water would do it. i use two caps of milk :D. helps a on lowering temp. but not that much.good luck

    OT:
heres my temp if u wanna compare.

I would recommend exchanging the machine if it is already showing signs of possible malfunction.

That's sad you aren't impressed with your P-FX. I have had nothing but joy from day one, as most. Seems like you landed a lemon... every manufacture has some...

Those temps are near to my 6860. Doesn't seem like a problem. Oh and how accurate is the Nvidia System Moniter for temp readings?

Hmm. When i use that program my heat is less then yours, at least when i first turn it on. Maybe heat isnt a problem, but then it doesnt explain why i get 10 less fps the my friend with the same computer on the same settings with the same drivers. And the clicking in my laptop kinda makes me nervous, so does the hotness of my powerbrick. To return or not to return, that is the question.

IS this normal? If it is, should i return it because it made a clicking sound and the power brick hisses and gets REALLY hot?

Those temps look good. Not sure about the clicking sound though.

Those are pretty good CPU temps. Click drive is probably the WD drive. Hard drives occasionally do make clicking noises, it it's a constant clicking sound, you might want to get it fixed. Clicking sound = HDD head parking

Temps look fine and the power brick is known to hiss and get hot at times. There are many threads, however not one has failed, so it seems to just be a noisy component in the output stage. Now about the clicking, that doesnt sound good. Do you have a CD in the CD-ROM? Does it make the noise in tandem with the hard drive light??

You can contact Gateway and get a replacement power adapter (and I believe you don't have to send the old one back).

I think the TZS1 is the chipset temp. And for some reason it's the highest temp of all for me. Idles at around 50C (I tore the thermal pad on accident and put AS5 in the gap instead, had it there for about a month now).

your x9000 run at what speed ?
i think peaking at 75 is no issue, [email protected] idle at 45 and at times peaks as high as 90c, never bsd, throtteling or shut downs.
however, @3.0 it gets too hot and i get system shut down within minutes of stress torturing.

I have mine set at 2.8, I'd like to goto 3ghz, but I would like to see maybe if I can get a better quality thermal pad for the chipset or find a way to get it cooler, unless I"m just worryin over nothing.

No. Not really. The stock cpu in the 6860 is multiplier locked and can only be overclocked by FSB, and right now, no one knows what PLL is in the laptop. God bless the ones who tried to find it. :)
