I have a couple of questions on a processor upgrade. I am looking at getting the 9300 since people seem to say only good things about it. From my understanding it is a 45mm chip which means it will lower the heat the computer puts out with the stock chip that it comes with. I also am wondering about Artic Silver thermal paste. Do you need to put that stuff on when upgrading a processor or is it fine without it? I don't want my processor to fry from excess heat. Much thanks.

another way to look at your cpu without AS5 (arctic silver) is like frying an egg WITHOUT oil. TOASTED!!!!!!!! in words, as5 helps with cooling by transmitting (dont know how to put it) heat from the cpu.
also, one thing to keep in mind is EVERY change/swap/check of CPU need re application of thermal paste -
Use the arctic silver, better safe than sorry and it will help reduce temps by quite a bit... I don't think it's safe to run w/ no thermal paste at all. I was also thinking of doing the same processor swap but a new batch of processors are coming out next month w/ a 1066 FSB and better stats than the 9300. I am hoping that these newer processors will be compatible w/ the mobo on the 6860. Does anyone know this by the way? The processors I'm speaking of are on the following webpage http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/27/intel-lays-out-roadmap-for-montevina-based-centrino-2-platform/ if anyone's curious.

Are there any directions of how to apply thermal paste?

It's usually on the package of thermal paste.

Arctic silcers site has a guide http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appinstruct/as5/ins_as5_intel_dual_wcap.pdf
