If it comes with the same honkin battery that is in the 6860s you can get a couple hours out of it with power saving features on and the brightness turned down abit . My power went out a couple months ago here and i managed to watch indiana jones temple of doom till the end and still had close to 20 mins of battery left or atleast thats what the machine was telling me :).

Awesome, Quadzilla! Thanks. That sounds good to me.

Running it at a higher res would drain the battery faster right?

Hmm, I'm pretty sure that's a no. It's about the level of brightness of screen. Battery drain is from the lamps lighting the screen, therefore, number of pixels displayed should not affect battery life.

Yeah i suppose thats true. All in all i guess the system will be pretty energy efficent for a gaming rig. Battery life should be pretty nice if it does keep the same battery (which it looks like it will) we might be able to squeeze an extra 20 minutes out of it.

Screw it i'll get the 7811 as long as it has the second hard drive bay still. I can always wait for a little longer until lower latency DDR3 comes into the picture.

I still want to know what dark gods Gateway prays to, to be able to get all of this in a system for under 1500 dollars. Either they are cutting corners in ways that no one can really tell (but are vitally important) or some of the "top of the line" brands are way overcharging for the new equipment

What exactly does "Begins shipping on August 14th" Mean?

Does this mean Best Buy will have models that day, that their online store will begin shipping them that day, or that Gateway will begin shipping them to Best Buy that day?

    lol.

I had that same question myself to be honest. I wouldn't hold me to the august 14th... I dont want a forum of angry men knocking on my door.

    I have a gun, and a dog. :) Just a fair warning.

I'm not sure though if they will be shipping from distribution or will be in the store august 14th.

As soon as I find out, you guys will be the first to know. :D

    Employee Discount?

Hmm... Maybe I should go apply to work for Best Buy so by the time the notebook releases, I could have an employee discount...

    Too bad I'm 15. :(
I was jokingly "offered a job" in the store once when I asked a few well informed questions. Heh.

Anyway, I already have a tent so I'm good to go.

Im 18, dude, apply early. Apply before your birthday and start calling your store and introduce yourself to the managers.

Takes 31days from the day of orientation for the E.D to kick in.. Actually, mine just kicked in. I think they let me have it a few days early..

Theres no way that was 31-days...

It's actually a fun place to work. I am currently a Fire Fighter with my local VFD as well as an EMT. EMS is what I plan to go into during college because it's something I enjoy and pays well. Ironically, my Customer Experience Manager was a Fire Fighter in Nevada and knew a friend at BB. During his off season in his 5th year (winter time), he had his friend get him a job at BB so he could get some good discounts..

He never went back to Fire Fighting.. Has been with the company 14 years now.

Like I said, fun place to work. Pays teens really well also.

u tryin to say its not funny or sometin? how messed up in ya mind you need to be to sleep in front of the store for few days just to get new ipod, iphone, laptop or whatever... u name it. Its ridiculous. Its like "You dont have a life nerdy bastards or sometin?" lol.

But really...? BB pays good? May i ask how much? And would salary be bigger if i have associate degree and 2 year experience of working at educational technology office @ college (dealing with computers, laptops, projectors and stuff of that nature). They used to pay me minimum because i was a student (work study), but boss liked me and i would start $20/h because of associate degree, if i apply now. Every year they increase your hourly wage by 80cents-1$, plus benefits because it is a state college. So just wondering if BB can match that...?

By the way, Chase, how did you managed to work as EMT? Dont you need a high school diploma, and emt license which you can obtain only in a year of taking special classes and training at a college or someting like that?

I guess I could sell the dell or give her the dell(she wont buy into that since my 2004 gaming desktop is her main rig and way more then what she needs/wants). I was comparing my dell to the 6860 back in jan and really the only reason I went with the dell is the 1920x1200 res and out of the box components were better. But this one is slightly better then my dell hardware wise on top of having the same res and a MUCH better graphics card. When it comes to best buy if I love it I may be coming home with one against my wifes will.

Really the only thing keeping me from this being a 100% done deal is quad core processors and whether or not I like the look and feel in person...oh and the fact that its almost $1500 and my wife will probably murder me in my sleep.

I volunteer with Harris County ESD-1. The EMT-B course was only 14 weeks long and I knocked out 72 hours of clinical time. Some schools take longer than others. Typically, it's only a few months long.

I doubt any retail job will match 20/hr. Thats probably not going to happen.

BB pays good for their positions. Consider wal-mart paying 7, I worked at altex for 8, was hired at target after I turned 16 for 6.25. 9 + the discounts suddenly doesn't sound too bad.

Sorry, but I doubt a 2-yr degree is going to get anybody 20/hr. Would be nice if it did though.

BWAHAHAHAHA! BB usually starts sales people at around $7.50/hr(varies on skill) and Geek Squad around $9/hr(again, veries on skillset). $20/hr, you crack me up. :D

9.00 an hour isnt too bad for a mass retail chain. I remember when i first started working (over a decade ago) at lowes i was a big shot to make 5.25 an hour :)

Man how the years and salaries fly. I would have killed for 9 bucks an hour back then.

Still it would probably be a really fun part time job, except for having to deal with customers all you really do all day is show off and play with tech (of course thats a bit over simplified but still)

Wonder if the discounts worth it... i only work half a year, it would give me something to do while i'm home. Though i would rather put rusty nails through my eyeballs than have to deal with customers... we consumers are about the biggest arses in the planet.

Imagine that Kamin Majere - Geek Squad :p

Honestly though, How likely is it they would hire a 16 year old?

I'm very tech savvy and all, but how would I let them know that? You just write about how much of a geek you are on the application and hand it in?
And do they even care? It seems like I know a lot more about their own products than their representatives in the store sometimes...

As you can see, I've never applied for a real job before.

LOL!!! Biggest thing about applying for a job is to be confident. Obviously you are going to know more about what you're selling than all your colleagues, and probably most people that come in to buy something. Use that to your advantage in getting hired, but don't be ****y about it....

Biggest thing though is that if you're going to be working customer service/on the floor selling, chances are Best Buy is going to take someone who is a better salesman than someone who knows their computers. Hopefully you have both, and if you aren't the most confident salesman out there, well... you have some time to practice, you're only 16 :p

Citizen86 has alot of it down. But truefully you have to walk a fine edge. Knowledgeable about everything (while useful) is largely irritating, and with out a forceful personality capable of convincing complete strangers that it was really their choice to spend 1000 dollars, then you dont do well on a sales floor.

I would hire a great looking suave retard over the knowledgeable sky genius 99 times out of 100 for the sales floor. The good looking confident guy can talk the money out of you and only really needs to be knowledgeable to anwser the questions that most every one ask (and those arent usually very technical)

So if you really want a job, i would fill out the application and attach a brief but detailed resume (no more than 2 pages, anymore and i would lose intrest) detailing your skills and abilities. But if called in for an interview you basically ignore your knowledge and present yourself very friendly and outgoing (but still mildly consertive) with a good sellers eye for consumers.

Your biggest strike is your age. Adults by large consider kids to be annoying and know it alls (but dont worry its true...and we were all annoying know it alls at 16) So your going to have to do all of the above while maintaining a mature manner.
You will have to learn to quickly show that your knowledge of a subject is good and that you arent just a kid trying to sell something all with in about 60 seconds of meeting a person/customer.

OK so all of this might not apply at best buy but it does apply in the larger business world. I had to fight it alot when i was younger. I've been a materials coordinator/logistics manager since i was 20... it took alot of hard work and quick thinking to keep the "old man club" from writing me off as just a hot shot kid trying to get their jobs... its very annoying, but worth it in the end.

And now after all of that speel i realize it actually has nothign to do with the topic at hand :p

i guess here in connecticut is different. My first 2 jobs when i was 17 years old, payed me $10/hour. One was dishwasher at harborside (old ppl house), another one was setting up conference tables at hotel. In college, like i said i was getting minimum (7.75 or sometin like that), because i had no AS degree (i still need 1 more class for AS). This chick that i was working with, worked as work study too, but she obtained AS last spring and now working over there for ~20/h. Oh and my mother has AS in nursing, shes making around $35/h (~70K a year), so no offense, but whoever said that with AS is not possible to get ~20/h is totally wrong, unless you talking like BB stores and stuff with AS. I honestly thought that they pay more tho. 8-9$, thats horrible. Then they take taxes and you have nothing... :|

no what they said was that at BB (and retail sales work in general) your not going to get 20 dollars an hour. Alot of jobs pay that with or with out degrees...but most of them arent mass chain retail store employees unless your talking about the management level.

not to pry... but what exactly is that degree? I didnt much keep up with the music majors so i'm a bit lost by that one

Granted your degree is out there, but you do have a 4 year and masters which can get you alot more jobs then justin music. Having completed a degree shows you can work hard and accomplish long term goals as well as show you have motivation. My 4 year degree can take me more places then just Network engineering and IT related stuff.

You are correct, Liquid. One of the first positions I was offered was Assistant Audio Engineer at the Sound Lab in Dallas, TX. This would have been a fantastic position, but I was wanting to actually pursue the art of music, not the engineering/production.

I don't regret the degree, but as 80% of people with similar degrees will say, "I was lucky." Most will not land a job/career in the field so easily, I just happen to know a few people in the process.

I'm quickly approaching 30, but loving the steady (and sometimes not so steady) career I'm lucky to have. Am I still a tight-wod? Oh yeah.

Well, I honestly think I'd do really well in a Salesperson position. Unless of course, there were attractive girls around. Then I'd just stutter and give her the wrong info.

Chase you should update the first page, takes a lot of digging to find the good info.

If by AS, you mean the 2yr degree from a Junior or Community College, then no, it's not very possible in this part of the country. I highly doubt many people start out with a 2 year degree making 50k a year. 22 year olds make with a B.A 39k or so starting out down here.

Then again, things are done differently here in houston. :p
