Dang! How long does it take you to take it apart and put it back together? Also, are you looking at both sides of the mobo or just one for the chips?

I looked up the Taimag one a couple weeks ago because it was the only one I could see with the back of the laptop removed... I believe it was either an ethernet controller chip or dial up modem.

This thread is totally relevant to my interests. I've been asking on this forum for many months now (on and off, I don't want to spam) and nobody has really offered any solid answers. But this, this is getting somewhere! One day I hope to put some as5 on my gpu.

When the case split the keyboard ended up collaterial damage in my fury \

The 2K figure to make a point for you to easily understand- guess no. Next time u want to "help" others, don't waste your time, just use a hammer, it'll be faster

Leave the disassembly to competent individuals,

It would make sense that the Gateway techs would not give u the info, if u are competent enough to take it apart, you should know how to put it back together,
why would Gateway tell u how to take it apart and open a can of worms
disassembling with no purpose other than to kill some boredom- especially if u admit being incompetent and breaking the unit

But there was a purpose. He was trying to find the PLL # that the gateway reps won't give us.

I'm sorry but I don't buy that. There have been numerous PLL help requests for this machine not only on this forum but also on other PC and OC forums. None of them have been answered. Where are these computer professionals who can get us that info? The closest thing to a computer professional that we've seen so far is that seemingly brilliant 16 year old kid that posted the pics above.

Danja, just let it go bud. He has no idea what hes talking about and has nothing constructive to add to the thread. Its like arguing the meaning of life with a lawnmower.

i wouldn't say that i'm brilliant, it wasn't all that hard to do. it's just like taking any electronic apart, just be careful and if something won't come out i look for a screw or clip.

i wrote down numbers i found on some of the chips cause i couldn't find a crystal so i figured i might get lucky and have found the pll.

taking it apart and reassembling it only take me about 15-20 minutes for each, just have to keep screws/placement organized.

i was just reading some of the first couple of pages.i'll post some info but not any full detail.

first remove the media bar, screws under battery.

next the keyboard which is only 5 screws i think.

then flip to the bottom, remove the HDD and CPU panels and take the optical drive out.

start taking all the screws out, there is one under one HDD slot, and keep them all together somewhere.

unplug the wifi card antennas, and flip it again and open the laptop.

in the two top corners are the lcd screws, remove those and uplug all wires connected.

once gone, there are about 7 screws that are hole the case together, remove them and the two screws under the keyboard, and one small silver screw just above those.

make sure you have all the screws out, and SLOWLY start at the optical drive slot to pull it apart.it may stick a little in the back.

then for the mobo, just unplug all wires and remove the top right speaker. now remove the screws with white arrows near them. and there are two in the top left and one to the right a little, remove those too.and lift that foil-like tape and there is one screw there.

once all those are out, slowly start at the gpu heat sink and pull up and left a little to get the ports out of the case.i also found it easier if you remove the cpu heat sink.

hopefully this helps, if your careful you can't really damage it.the only thing on mine is a nic on the side and a couple of very light scratches on the lid. unless you look closely at some of the screws inside you can't tell i took it apart.

Thanks much for your efforts. Could you please list the manufacturer codes and part numbers for the components? Maybe a concerted effort can track down the PLL.

Well, good thread so far. Though I don't need a picture for every single step, how exactly do you get the first step going? The part about removing the media bar. I don't want to destroy anything trying to remove it.

take the battery out and under it are two screws, take those out.the get a small flat head and pry it open carefully at the hinge.it easiest when the screen is open all the way, and once both hinges are popped up just carefully lift.

Ah, so that's what the screws under the battery meant. I'll probably take some pics whenever I get around to taking this sucker apart. I hope someone beats me to it! =p

way to go guys, i was going to attempt this one day, but it seemed too daunting for me. I wanted to clean out all the dust, but some compressed air worked just fine :)
