Hey guys so I bought a 6860 a couple months back and now it seems every day or so my screen will just shut off after a couple minutes of gaming. it first happened while playing gears of war, but then on counter strike source and just a second ago on guild wars, there is nothing i can do to get the screen back on aside from manually powering off the system. any ideas? (I really don't want to reformat, installing all my games is such a pain in the a$$.)

download hwmonitor and watch your temps while gaming.
-
I had the exact same problem and there's a thread about it here somewhere.
After switching from the default Gateway video drivers the problem disappeared. Crazy but true.
I even considered returning my laptop. I also played GOW on mine and I'm curious how is the game running for you? -
update drivers, dont play on battery ?
-
yeah i think what happened was i did some windows updates and thrown in there was a revert to original drivers, because i had updated to 177.92. GOW runs great, stutters at times though.
-
ok... updated to 177.98, and im not retarded enough to game on battery, and it did it again like 20 seconds after loading guild wars. any other ideas?
-
I also have been monitoring temps. right now i am playing guild wars. temps haven't gone over 50C.
-
does the notebook hangs ? if you press caps lock or num lock does the lights go on/off ?
-
50c for cpu or gpu ?
-
i haven't checked whether caps/num lock work, i'll do that next time. as far as temps go, i ran 3dmark06 and none of the temps listed by hwmonitor went over 66C
-
thats normal temps i get about same.
-
ok so it just happened again. the caps/num lock lights won't change so apparently the whole pc locked. also instead of the sound going off it repeated the same millisecond of sound over and over. like duhduhduduhduhduhduduh, this is getting really annoying, anyone know of a fix. if not i'll go to my store(i work for bestbuy) and try to convince my boss to give me our last 7811 in exchange.

reformat reinstall.

Try to see if you can use Windows Restore feature to restore back to before the issue started happening. Might be something you installed...
