Well my generally trusty 6860FX might need a bit of an update as I've never really been particularly happy with Vista on it.

I'm keen to try formatting the machine and loading Windows 7 but would like to know if this is a good idea, or am I going to be plagued with problems?

I'm not interested in doing the update if I'm going to lose on on various hardware benefits.

    Any advice?

    Cheers in advance ;)

The upgrade to Windows 7 is a choice that you should go with, nothing but sunshine once I updated. The machine feels much faster now that it isn't bogged down and you still get all the same driver support. Definitely a must have upgrade in my opinion

Well that sounds like a task for this week to track down all the relevant drivers.

I was just a bit concerned that some stuff might not work with Windows 7. I read a few reports about graphics drivers and HDMI audio output. To be fair I very rarely use HDMI but it is a handy feature.

I take there are no issues with Blutooth as I use that very frequently with my phone for transferring photographs?

Trust me those reports are over blown I own a P-6860FX that I upgraded the CPU to a T9300 and 8Gigs Ram and it runs great with W7x64Ult Sp1. But make sure you go to the gateway site and type your serial number to get the right drivers for your laptop. Once you do that install the O/S and then the drivers and you should be in business. Not sure about the HDMI issues but I doubt there would be a problem since I loaded Nvidia 301.xx the latest release driver and it works fine.

All the vista drivers work with W7, just do an upgrade from vista and you lose nothing

Just wondering if you could tell me the model number of the RAM that you used (2 x 4GB SO-DIMMS, right?) to get your 6860fx to 8GB?

I've got the same machine and would love to upgrade the RAM.

    Thanks in advance!
