Hey got a question for the 6860 guys if your still browsing here.... My 6860FX has been having a problem lately (few weeks) that during Gaming it just turns off after heating up pretty good. I keep it propped up on a case and have it plugged in. If I play Crysis for more then 10 minutes it will crash same with Command And Conquer 3. Anyone have this problem??? Please help me out this is VERY annoying.

    Completely Stock 6860FX
    Video Drivers:7.15.11.6746

    Thanks

What are your temps? Use HWmonitor to obtain them... Sounds like your computer is overheating.. Use the program to be sure that that is in fact whats causing problems.

95 Degrees its definetly gonna crash soon. Is the fan for the GPU on the right side of the laptop or is it the one on the left side?

Your cpu is definitely way too hot. Its almost hitting the max. it can take..

1.You should try undervolting the CPU. ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824)

    2. Open and check if something is wrong with the heatsink, maybe add some AS5 on the CPU. Perhaps tighten the screws?

Yes open it up and and redo the paste or maybe your screws vibrated from heatsink...Who knows but thats HOT Intel max is 101c i think..My X9100 only gets to 68c!

Would undervolting the CPU do anything since its the GPU thats overheating? I play Crysis for 10 minutes and it shoots up to 95 and crashes VERY shortly afterwards.

Wait, the GPU spikes up to 95 aswell? Thought it was only the CPU.
It might still, very well be your heatsink that is loose.

Wait, the GPU spikes up to 95 aswell? I really think that your heatsink is loose, try opening it - loosen the heatsink (clean the exhaust) and put it back in.

Sorry I meant to say GPU earlier, its the GPU that constantly overheats.

Yes I opened it up as much as I could and used some Q-Tips to clean a very small amount of dust the internals were VERY clean. Anyways I could only get off the cover of the Hard Drive and whatever component is at the back right (if your using the laptop). I am assuming the video card is in the back left I was unable to get to it and couldnt find a guide online to break it down that far. I did take all the screws I could find out but it still wouldnt open all the way, I must be missing something.

nah, the gpu is far from being accessible.
does the gpu fan spins at all ? does it make abnormal noises ?
did you try dusting off with some canned air ?

dont go the the gpu disassemble route unless very confident in your skkillz.

Yes, the GPU is not really accessible.. But I once removed the thermal tape from my northbridge, and forgot to replace it - resulting in HUGE GPU temp spikes. At least according to HWmonitor - so I figured you might be experiencing the same kind of problem with the northbridge.

There are 5 screws which you have to remove, the 4 holding the CPU (on the small silver legs), and one furthest to the right on the heatsink (a big screw which cant come all the way out).

The fan is spinning at 192rpm on Nvidia Monitor or whatever. There are no abnormal noises and I dont see any dust at all in the vents.

does it spin up when haet builds up ?
you can try with furmark (run windowed) do watch the temps closely and kill furmark if it goes too high.

Well im assuming its working but I cant hear it and it feels like its barely blowing any air out at all. Im sitting at 65C right now which im thinking is a little hot. When I open Dead Space ill shoot up to 85C in less then 5 minutes. Is there a program to determine if its working or not(the fan)? I have NVIDIA MonitorView open and its only showing fan Aux1 rotating at 192 RPM's.

i think your fan in borked, when my gpu is over 60 it blows air out like a dragon.
and temp never go above 67 even while o/c.
i didnt find any program that is able to read the p-68xx fan speed.
