Hey I am having a weird problem with my 6860FX. I was playing some BC2 and it was running fine at 70C verified with Rivatuner/HWmonitor. I closed out and browsed the web for about 20 minutes and then my computer shut off. I then rebooted and noticed the laptop was much hotter (physically) once I got to the desktop I opened up Rivatuner and HWmonitor and my 8800m was at 98C and climbed up to 102C with NOTHING open. What the heck?

    -Mike

    Edit-
Im playing on a desk with the back of laptop elevated.

When was the last time you cleaned out your system? It probably is dust build up either stoping the fan or stopping airflow from correctly reaching the heat sink.

Though with out 6860's reaching the age they have, it might almost be time to take them apart and redo all of the thermal paste and doing a very through cleaning.
I'm probably going to do that to mine in the next month or two.

Its weird because I had not played a game on my 6860 in awhile so I cleaned it out then loaded up BC2 saw that temps were fine, browsed the internet and bam it cuts off. I have been using it as a HTPC hooked up to a monitor and wireless keyboard/mouse for awhile just fine. I am updating the drivers now, the system is stabilized at 49C.

-Just restarted with new drivers and idle at 89C argh!

Did some open heart surgery, found 3 hairballs in the GPU fan. Running much cooler now.

That will do it for sure. That is the problem when using them as HTPC, you tend to set aside and forget..................

Did a little open heart myself on my P7805uFX a few weeks ago. Took 5 hours, but it only took that long because I was literally cleaning every little nick and cranny perfectly.. ran like a dream when i got done though.. well worth it!!.. a little advice.. I dont know if your heat sink is like the P7805's but every once in a while, remove the heat sink and clean the grader at the end where the fan cools it. theres where all the dust and b/s goes.
