I have an 6860FX and I love it. However, call of duty 4 stutters at time and the system at a whole sometimes runs slow. I am 99.9% sure it is due to the speed of the CPU.
So I am looking to upgrade to a t9300 cpu.
How much faster will this make my laptop run?
Any benchmarks around showing raises in performance from the old cpu?
-
people who upgraded to t9300 are usually identified by a wide childish grin that they cannot seem to get rid off.
just use the search box, you can't miss them. -
would that account for the stuttering in the game? I get 60FPS but at times it will just freeze for a quick second then go back to normal?
is that the hard drive or the cpu doing it? -
Jzabi...I upgraded my system to a T9300. I significantly improved the "smoothness" of game play. But it really depends on the game you are playing. I play primarily Crysis and WIC, Crysis is a GPU intense game and WIC is CPU intense. Regardless the game play improved across the board.
You will really enjoy the improved performance overall. Anticipate at least a 6-10 FPS improvement over current game play depending on the game and of course the settings.

It depends on if you mean single player or online. Alot of times online you can have certain server that are that way in general, stuttering and pausing as a result of the server not the computer that your playing on or the game. They don't put those warnings on games for no reason "gameplay may change in online play". That warning is on most online games. If your in a game that is allmost at the max number of players, stuff like that is likely to occur. Now on single player and also online, I can tell you that you will see a difference in smoothness and frame rate with the T9300 (I installed ome on My P6860 last month) and I'm loving it so-far.

Well, I am going to get the t9300.
When I upgrade it, the heatsink is placed on the gpu too right?
Should I replace the gpu thermal paste as well, or will it be fine to re-use what is on there when I go to put the heatsink back on? -
No, you must replace it with new AS-5 or Ceramique.
Did you patch your game? -

Isn't it the GPU that is to the right?
and if so, then I leave the thermal tape on it right? No need to replace the GPU with arctic silver? -
I'm pretty sure it's the motheboard chipset right? Because the other vents on the other side of the laptop get way hotter than the cpu area. I left the thermal tape on there, seems fine so far.
-
Out of curiosity, am I the only one who found the screws ridiculously tight? I decided to leave off the CPU upgrade because of that.
-
Mine weren't too bad. Lefty-loosey? Mine oddly didn't have springs under two of them though. So I had thought I lost them inside the machine somewhere.
-
You gotta use a #1?? screwdriver, otherwise it may strip the screw
I only had a spring under one screw when I removed cpu and I know it wasnt there before, are u saying that there should have been 2 springs?? -
My screwdriver fits fine, the damn thing just wouldn't turn, or at least not without what I felt was excessive amounts of force. -
Hmm, I only found one spring in the 2 o'clock position, but everything works perfectly so I am leaving it alone.
-
springs under 2 and 8 as in guide.
wasn't that tight.
do not remove the thermal pad on the mob chipset (its not the gpu) do not apply any thermal grease there. just look at the guides posted and follow them 100 %, shouldn't take more than 10 minutes the first time. -
I figure if it's not too pricey, I'll just "risk" letting them do it. -
i dont think they'd like that, as replacing your cpu voids your waranty.
just do it carefully, DONT spray any wd-40 -
Well, I thought Gateway-approved technicians okay'd to work on Gateway products?
Yea, don't intend to use WD-40.
The damn thing is just a little too tightly screwed for me to feel comfortable with it. I guess I might try it again in a day or two. -
hey dtwn83, do you have a home depot near you? if so, they have the perfect screwdriver. cost about 5 bucks. it's call a husky 8-in-1 slotted/phillips part number 163 149
the best damn little driver you can get..has different size tips for small screws...i use them for taking apart all laptops. never had a problem with them stripping screws. -
This one right?
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs...D25X-_-100074336&locStoreNum=6153&marketID=93 -
yep, that's the one..get the hex one as well part number 165 335
so your covered on all types of jobs. -
Hmm, apparently my machine's heat sink is screwed down incredibly tightly. After having to apply way too much force, I managed to get 3 of the 4 screws around the CPU out. Unfortunately, the last one got somewhat stripped. I gave up at that point.
Now looking for methods of removing stripped screws
Anyone got any idea where I could find replacements for the CPU screws?
Man, this day is annoying. I lost the receiver for my VX revolution and now my screw's stripped. Ugh. -
I didn't read the whole thread and don't know if the answer has been given. But I used to use an older driver and while playing any 3D game, the game would run butter smooth, but the lock up for a second or so and then continue being buttery smooth. Unless your cpu is installed incorrectly, I put the blame on the drivers.
-
Yeah, I have a really old driver. I am going to be updating to a new driver through laptopvideo2go
-
you may need to order some very small needle nose vice grip pliers. so you can clamp it around the head of the screw and turn. or if you can do two things at once...clamp the screw and put the biggest tip of the driver set in and turn them both at the same time while pushing down hard on the screw driver. this is not the easiest thing to do. and you should be able to replace the cpu screw with one of your case screws.
edit: replacement screws can be had by going to the second hand computer store -
I think I need smaller pliers, the needle nose pliers I got doesn't work.
Thanks johnkss. -
no problem
those would be special type of pliers and they are very small. maybe about 4" in length....
did you get the hex driver set as well?
also try the flat head side of the screw driver. to make a slight groove in the screw. some times with stripped screws...you can use the flat head or a hex screw driver to turn them. -
I thought of that, but I wanted to avoid applying the kind of force needed to notch the stripped screw. Somehow, applying that much force to my motherboard seems rather... unhealthy?
-
some times you have to... meaning apply extra force.
and we are thinking more along the lines of notching it from the inside and not the outside of the screw, so that you can use the hex driver to turn it. -
Applying that kind of force makes me wonder if I'm going to stab the motherboard instead. -
well...it's either that or drill or take it to a computer shop. they should charge like 10 to 50 bucks if that. they would have the tools to pull it out. and allot of times it can be done while you wait.
-
Any idea if they can do upgrades too? -
-
I'm going to make the upgrade soon.
Should I wait a little?
Are prices dropping soon?
Will a better CPU be avaliable soon in this type of price range?
Thanks -
get it on ebay if your looking for an early price cut. otherwise i can't speculate on when prices are dropping...

Quick question: is the t9300 compatible with the M-6850FX model or only the 6860?
-
Works fine with 6850FX. If you are interested in the 6850FX and want to upgrade its processor, you might be better off getting the M152XL from Gateway directly instead.
And call them to see if you can get a discount. -
Sadly I can only buy what my local Best Buy has to offer, which is the 6850FX. Gateway doesn't ship to Canada
-
Oh, in that case, check out nicx for purchasing the T9300.
-
Or eBay, the guys there have it about $70 cheaper. I don't know why tigerdirect.ca doesn't have it by the way.
-
About 250 on Ebay? -
Hey guys!
I bought a T9500 CPU and I would like to ask that which thermal paste do you recommend?
-Arctic Silver 5
-Noctua NT-H1
According to the reviews, the Noctua is better than the AS5 and its cheaper tooWhat is your opinion?
-
-
just get the paste you like and apply according to instructions, most important is not to put too much. make a search "thermal grease shootout", it will supply more info.
-
By the way, are you sure you can find the 6850FX in Best Buy Canada? I can't seem to find it online anymore.
-
Yeah I can't find it online either but it's definitely at my local store the last time I checked, which was about a week ago. If it's vanished since then, then I'll give a relative in the states the money to get the laptop and have them re-mail it to me
