So the audio works over it no problem but when I go into counter-strike or something that supports 5.1 it doesn't play over the rear speakers. Any ideas what the problem is?

The decode happens in your Surround-sound receiver, not the PC. What are you using for the external amp and how is it set up? Do movies played on the computer through the surround-sound system activate your rear speakers?

I just have a hdmi cable run through my pc to my receiver, most of the time my stereo reads STEREO 96k. I am using a Denon AVR-1910, and yes surround sound movies do activate the rear speakers.

And what are the audio options in Counterstrike? Have you tried 2-channel stereo output and let the receiver do the heavy lifting?

I have noticed various games have historically had problems with surround sound. Have you checked the publishers forums?

I have tried it in 2 channel and it still does the same thing. It works fine on my desktop with its own speakers but not with this hooked up to my surround sound.

OK.... When a movie plays, what sampling rate is displayed on the receiver? Is it the same as when playing a game? If not, can you change the sampling rate either in the game or in the sound card setup?

    Grasping at straws here...

Any results in the game forums?

Your problem is where the data stream comes from movies in at 5.1 the data stream from the audio chip is only 2.0. With movies the data stream is passed from the disc right to hdmi, with games the sound is proccesed again by the internal audio.....

Now if the Movie audio is Dolby Prologic rather than DTS, then it is proccesed though the audio chip and being encoded out by the audio reciever to 5.1

If I get an audio card that can process 5.1 will it process it on that then pass it through hdmi?

Most of those cards have their own audio output that is 5.1

HDMI 1.2 and 1.3 defined (1.2 in our laptops).
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Definition_Multimedia_Interface#Version_1.0_to_1.2

Basically, HDMI 1.2 supports 8 channels of digital 24-bit audio. I still believe there is either:

    A. A driver issue
    B. A Game/setting issue
    C. A compatibility issue with the receiver

As none of my games have surround-sound capability, I can't test for you. You may want to invest a small amount of cash and get the Toslink optical cable for the laptop and test using an optical input on your receiver. That will at least let you know if the laptop is properly sending surround-sound information to the receiver. Not a long-term solution, but a diagnostic tool.

Could you do me a favor and download one of the 5.1 audio samples that are on the internet and try that?

Tried a couple of AC3 and WMV files. No surround. Receiver never left Linear PCM mode. Blue Ray movies still decode just fine. Oh well, no solution from me. Using stock as-shipped drivers.

Its prolly because it process that audio and only passes along the blu-ray audio.

    One thought...

There was another thread on this issue. You might try looking it up. There was mention of a required codec that had to be downloaded to get AC3 files to play properly.

It might be a starting place...

You can easily play AC3 files with the K-lite mega pack, but i'm not sure if that will fix your problem completely
