I know there have been alot of HD threads lately but they dont seem to cover my issue. Does installing the 2nd HD void my extended 3 year bestbuy warranty? I called and some employee half-way said no it doesnt, but I dont really believe him (I have been screwed by geek squad before).

If it didnt void my warranty I would install it myself using this video as a guide:

I have also decided to go with a 500gb drive which one of these 3 which you choose?

You can either go for the WD5000BEVT ( Review), or wait for the Hitachi 5K500.B, which has a super-low power consumption of 1.4W (vs the 2.5W of the WD).

Or wait for the Seagate 500GB 7200rpm drive which is rumoured to be available mid December.

WD is definitely the best 500GB drive that's available now though. I had two Samsung's before my WDs and they were awful drives - slow, hot and noisy.

You're altering the laptop, so they could say you voided the warranty.
they can use anything against you honestly.

    My Hard drive upgrade plan:
    1. Pick up 2 new hard drives
    2. Mirror ORIGINAL hard drive to one of the new ones.
    3. store ORIGINAL HARD DRIVE in a safe place

In case anything happens to fail with the new hard drives and your laptop stops working, you can take the new hard drives out and place the ORIGINAL hard drive back into the bay. so they can't say that you altered your laptop.

Ive had an incident where I removed the cover of my desktop (sticker broken) to install an extra stick of ram, and they said that i voided the warranty. Could just be me, but i rather be safe than sorry.

I haven't heard anything about a 500GB 7200rpm WD drive although I'm sure they will launch one sooner or later.

Pop, the sticker you broke is intended to identify machines that have been serviced outside of the manufacturer, expressly for the purpose of voiding the warranty. It doesn't matter why it was broken, just that it was. It's to protect the manufacturer against having to service machines that have been messed up by people, including people who bought the wrong parts or broke something when installing a part, and repair shops that messed up repairs or upgrades or that stole quality components out of it and replaced them with cheap ones.

However, none of the covers on the Gateway machines, including the hard drive bay cover, is stickered like that. And they put out a Component Replacement Manual on their site for us to follow when making changes :D It covers hard drive replacement, as well as other replacements like RAM and the wireless card.

And it doesn't say anything about voiding the warranty by using those instructions, so if you tell them you followed that when doing your upgrade, I don't see how they could refuse service.

If you do have a return, I'd certainly put the machine back to original though, best not to have to explain anything.
