hey guys/gals my fx 7118 fan has this wierd fan revving noise periodically even in light used. the reving stops for like a min then it goes back up to that noisy rev sound. is this normal or should i be concern? this is my 2nd fx the first one i had to return due to locking issues and it had the old bios. this one seem to have the new bios and is working fine other then the fan noise. should i exchange and risk getting a worst one or should i just keep it? and is there a way to fix the fan or is that revving sound normal?

A fan will rev, since it spins, just like a car motor, or a wheel. There have been "issues" with the fans on the 7811, however, as long as they function properly and appropriately cool the laptop components, then they are fine.

They function fine but its just a lot nosier then the first gateway fx 7118 that i got. I guess its just annoying to hear when the room is quiet and one hear this loud rev as if i was performing something strenuous task and all i got is firefox open. Is there a silent mode on this and if there is one what is the combo keys for it anyone knows?

Its a common issue. The GPU fan has some screwed up thermal throttling.

If you don't have the new BIOS you should update, on my machine it cut the revving down quite a bit, but as people said it's quite normal. Also, don't think of Firefox as "light use" - I love it but it's a resource hog.

The fan in the 7811 seems to work like an oil furnace in a house: at a certain temp it kicks on, and when it's done the job (which can be quite quick) turns off again, as opposed to a lot of laptops which run the fans at a moderate level all the time.
