During 3D Mark my GPU gets up to 73, and then my FPSs drop to 9s and 6s.
Is there a way to make that stop?
I have my overclock set to
    720 Core
    1003 Memory
    1845 Shader

Admiral, visit www.cpuid.com and download HWMonitor. Run whatever clocks you were usin..and also have HWMonitor running in the background. Then post a screen shot of your HW temps after you find the downclocking of your FPS. It is 99.9% a TZS0 issue, and you're hittin 98c. Don't be skeered..it's ok. But, if you lower your clocks to 698/988/1798 you will never have that problem again. :) the shader is too high, the memory doesn't need to be that high..and the core..well, it prolly isnt gaining you much. Lemme know how this works for ya. :)

What he said. I bet you saw someone else post those settings and thought you'd give them a try, right? Don't. Start with a little OC and go up in small increments. Fortunately, the GPU in general is rather forgiving, but each one is different and some don't OC as well as others. If you go straight to settings that are too high on a GPU that doesn't want to OC, you can end up with an expensive paperweight.

I dont mean to jack the thread but I was just wondering if my temps where ok. I OC my GPU to 700/900/1700 and my temps pretty much rose 2C while idle(41C to 43C), and when I ran 3Dmark06 my max temp also went up 2C (67C to 69C). I was just wondering if this is a safe overclock amount.

    Alright
Is there a way to see these monitors WHILE I'm running 3D Mark?
    What is TZSO?

Yes, actually, there is a way to see the gpu temp during 3DMark06, but not TZS0 (That's a zero), using RivaTuner. There is a post around here that gives a very nice description of how to do it. HWMonitor keeps track of the low, high and current values of TZS0, TZS1, Cpu temps, and GPU temp. I usually start it and put the window over on the right side of the screen, then I can see what the temps were inbetween each section of 3DMark06. The TZS0 thing is a bit of bugger. When it hits 98C, this usually triggers a CPU downthrottle to try to cool things down. The question is, is the 98C temp legitimate or is it caused by something else, like increased current in a line near the sensor, or caused by using a 120watt powersupply on a system with a 135 watt power budget, or simply OCing to the extent that you just can't draw enough current to run the GPU at the specified speeds and voltages. I'm still waiting for my 180watt power supply to arrive to see if that solves the TZS0 problem.

Also i noticed that your clocks are the same as mine on my high 3dmark, are you using the xfastest driver? I'm now using doc's 180.43 and don't overclock so much bc it's just not worth it to fry my gpu and i don't recommend clocking that high I just did it to get a high score, but it's not stable and like i said i don't oc that high when gaming.

Admiral, there's a guide on here to do a clean video driver install.. follow it, and try either the Xfastest video driver, or the new Dox driver. Also, download the 6.03 Nvidia control panel, and the new PhysX drivers. Id post a link to all of the above, but I have to get to work. Can someone please direct him to the forementioned downloads, and video driver guide?

Thanks, that is exactly what I did actually. I went with Dox.
How do the PhysX drivers help me if I don't have a Physx card?
I did do it, but I don't see how it works...
I managed to get just below 9000 on 3DMark. I don't remember my clock settings though. I tried to overclock a bit more than that, and I ended up having my drivers restart...
800 core clock seems to cause problems....
I am having another problem that I might have to make a thread about unless just reinstalling the audio drivers. When I plug in my headphones, the speakers keep on playing. When I mute the speakers specifically, and I raise the volume on the headphones, WMP won't play through the headphones.. It is being a real pain.

    EDIT:
Now I can OC and do fine in the first 3D Mark test, but for Firefly Forest, my FPSs just start dropping at temps of about high 60s low 70s. They drop till like 9s and then slowly start climbing up to the teens. This is very annoying...

Also my laptop stays at 2D performance levels whenever it is on battery. This is a real pain when I'm trying to game while running on the battery.

This sounds very much like what I experienced. Bring up HWMonitor and leave it over on the right side of the screen before you start 3DMark06. In the flicker between FireFly and CPU Test 1, you may notice that TZS0 maxed at 98C. In fact it may still be at 98C. This may cause either a memory or a CPU downclock, and that would be why you see your framerate drop. It's not that the gpu can't handle the overclock. If you don't see TZS0 max at 98C then you'll have to look elsewhere.

You can get 3D performance on battery by disabling Powermizer, but I would not advise overclocking as the battery may not be able to provide the power needed to ensure a stable system (many people have reported problems with lockups and crashes when trying to game on battery). In fact, I would try underclocking the gpu a little if you want to game on battery (assuming you've disabled Powermizer)

Well I'm looking at the hardware monitor from Rivatuner while I'm doing the test, and the GPU isn't underclocked nor does it hit the 90's. I've been in the 90's before and I haven't experienced a loss in FPS. I really don't understand it.

I don't plan on actually leaving my system overclocked. This is just for benchmark purposes really.
Disabling powermizer? I don't mind it when my computer underclocks WHILE I'm doing 2D things, but I just want it to go to the normal clocks while I'm doing 3D Games. Will disabling powermizer do that?

Rivatuner does not report TZS0 and TZS1. It only reports GPU temps. I'mtalking about CPUID's WHMonitor program. Go here and download HWMonitor 1.11.

I think there is a way to allow it to ramp up clocks on battery, but that info is at home. I'll post those instructions tonight if I find them .

My bad, that's what I get from trying to do too many things at one time. What were the TZS0 and TZS1 max temperatures when you ran 3DMark? Did you catch a glimpse of the temps in between firefly and CPU test 1?

I aborted the test once Firefly Forest had just started, because that is when it always drops the FPSs. That is exactly what happened again this time, and after I aborted the test, the temps had gone up to 98C for TZS0 and 54C for TZS1.
Wow... I had no idea the temps were going that high... That is insane.
How dangerous is that temp? At what point will my Computer start freaking out and having my GPU melt inside of it?

Wow you get those clocks too high , I'm experienced artifacts playing grid with 675/925/1625 but only after 2 hours of game, so it's not stable, and the bad thing is the problem is not the temps cpu 40 gpu 72 TZS0 51, then i get stucked with that problem, will try downclock it to 650/925/1600 and teste again, but i think it has something related to AC adapter. Iv disable the powermizer like the tutorial saids, but it's not work for me , not on battery.

I'm actually running my GPU at
    750 Core
    900 Memory
    and 1700 Shader.

I don't get artifacts or anything though. Everything is going fine, but then the FPSs just drop like crazy. When I'm running Riva Tuner, it doesn't actually SHOW an underclocking, which is why it is so weird.
The GPU core gets max 65 C, but that TZS0, which I don't know what it is, is the one that gets blazing.

Edit: After running 3D Mark again just now, I noticed something odd. After the first test, the TZS0 temp was 58C, but then right after firefly forest started, the FPSs drop, and I aborted it. Within maybe 6 seconds, it has supposedly climbed all the way up to 98C. That doesn't make any sense...

Yep, your problem is defenily the TZS0 high temps my friend, but it's not mine, so i'm confused about whats going on

BTW is there any rule i should fallow to oc and don't get artifacts? Rive tuner doubles the shaders over the core clock 1:2, but you didn't do that and don't get any artifacts...

TZS0 and TZS1 are related to the GM45 firmware. I think they are the two Internal Northbridge sensors, but the chipset spec also allows for two external sensors, so I'm not sure which it is, but I may know more in the near future. When TZS0 hits 98C, one of two things may be happening. It signals an ACPI interupt to direct ACPI to downthrottle the CPU to reduce power consumption thereby reducing heat, or it may trigger the internal GMCH (firmware) response to downthrottle the memory to the same effect. I suspect that the temp is reported as 98C as ACPI has some set max value and possibly the sensor reports a value that is out of range on the high end. There are some theories on what might cause this and what, if anything, can be done about it. (You could use RMClock to inhibit the downthrottle but you lose .6 of your clock multiplier on the P8400. Also, if it is a legitimate temp spike, then doing so may run the risk of damaging the firmware)

MetalAngel, what did you use to undervolt the P8400? I thought RMClock would drop the processor clockmultiplier a bit since it doesn't do fractional multipliers onthe P8400.

Well, I found my limit on up to what point I can overclock before my TZS0 flips out....
    I also went OVER 9000
    lol..
    Yeah
    At
    700/900/1500
    I got a 9132 score.
If I overclock even to 725, the TZS0 jumps to 98 in a couple seconds and ruins my score.

Uhm.. do not clock your core past 700. That's your first problem. And dont push the mem past 1000, and the shaders dont need to go past 1800..once you go over these clocks, you're just wasting time, unless it's just for a high 3dmark score. Simple clocks that will NEVER fail you, as long as you elevate the rear of the system. 698/988/1798. Max performance, will take a couple hours of intense gaming for it to trip TZS0, and it is 100% stable.

And, if you're looking for a high 3dmark06 record..you can run 713/1013/1848.. or maybe it was 1884 shader. But, THESE CLOCKS ARE NOT STABLE FOR GAMING AND WILL NOT PERFORM WELL DOING ANYTHING OTHER THAN 3DMARK!!! Quit latching onto big numbers just cause you see someone else with them. Read what the numbers ARE. Geez.. you keep that up you'll ruin something.

I think I already said in this thread that my overclocking was only for benchmark purposes. I'm just trying to get as a high a score as possible. For gaming, however, I bring everything down to stock. If I get over 20 FPSs while gaming, I don't see the need to overheat the system.

Any max recommendations for a 9600M (actually FX 770M which is based off the 9600M)? My defaults are 500/800/1250 and scores 5900-6000 in 3DMark06. I overclocked to 800/1050/1750 and got 8000+ in 3DMark06 but after reading what you said I'm not sure it would perform very stable in real recent games for a few hours. I don't want to fry it out but I'm looking for the max OC I can get and NVIDIA System Tools doesn't really tell you what's recommended, besides that optimal button, which sometimes recommends me to clock down -_-.

When you consider that the 9800M GTS is 600/799/1500 stock, I'd say you did pretty good on that. I can't push my core much passed 700 without having problems.

As far as what is reccommended... the stock settings are what is recommended. Each gpu is a little bit different. If you OC, you run the risk of frying something. I am a bit surprised you only got into the 8000+ range with that OC, what processor are you running? The base model comes with a P8400, same as 7811. And doesn't the M440 come with Quadro 770m or 1700M graphics? 770M is in the same category as 9600M.

Did you update the video BIOS to turn it into a 9600M? I wish my 9800M GTS would OC that high.

That is one heck of an OC.. And to go from 6k to 8k..that's substantial. Best thing you can do is run a temp program in the background, and play your games.. see how hot the GPU gets, and also see if you have any artifacts, tearing, or distortion of the screen while gaming. Or, maybe the driver will just fail and kick you back to the OS, to reboot. You can find several stress test programs such as FurMark, or ATITool(i dont recommend), but.. those are stressing ONLY the GPU. And, in gaming, your CPU is also taking some of the load off, so just cause it doesnt pass a stress test, doesn't mean it wont game well at the same clocks. And just like artificial benchies like 3dmark, some are more CPU, some are more GPU oriented. So, some games may run with higher clocks and no problems..others, not so much. I feelt the best stress test for my rig was Crysis, and COD4.. those tended to push the heat, and if I had any issues with the driver failing, or any abnormalities with the game, Id back down about 5mhz on only ONE clock, usually core, and then if it happened again..bump that clock back up and back down another.. If it didn't work out the first run through at 5Mhz on one, Id back down core 5mhz and memory 5.. then mem shader.. then core shader.. But, at the end of the day.. I realized that there's a fine balance..a little luck, a lot of trial and error.. And, it took me a good month to find stable clocks for the 7811. But, the driver is more important than the clocks.

    To the OP:
If you run Xfastest and Dox.. no OC..you'll notice similar 3dmark results..and games, similar performance.. most people find that xfastest gave better gaming performance. Now, when you go to OC the both of them, I managed to get Xfastest up to 720-30 or so core, a little over 1010 memory, and almost 1900 shader..and no artifacts. Others seem to be having trouble getting clocks anywhere near that. Heck, I pushed the limits and got it to run 748/1023/1984 using X..and driver never failed.. and I got my highest 3dmark ever. Now, we all know 3dmark isn't everything.. but, it is a good judge of how far you can push your system..

Tell ya what tho, here's an email from the guy I sold my FX to.. He tried updating the Xfastest drivers I had left in the tweaked system I sold him.. then came back asking how to restore them. I gave him a quick walkthru, and also mentioned the clocks that I ran for gaming.. well, here's what he thought:

Once again.... I'm in your debt.
I followed your directions and WOW I never knew! Dead Space (my current & only game) was capped @ 30fps due to Vsync. I disabled that and I was running average of 57fps (1920x1200 all settings on) strong during full game action -cycling up to 150+ during certain scenes... THEN I used your OC settings and that (during the same section -I just reloaded and compared at a save game point) same area I was seeing an average of 78fps and 180+! during the boring areas!
    HOLY CRAP!
Reminds me of the days when DOOM came out (yeah, I was around back then) I had a 286 12Mhz ! ;) and was excited when it ran it. Now when something runs so smooth it makes you wonder what you don't have turned on and then you realize.... wait a minute, everythings on!
    Very nice!
    Thanks!

Not trying to pat myself on the back, just letting you know I have spent MANY of hours to find that the Xfastest drivers that I originally ran across, they can't be outperformed for performance, OC'ing, and stability. Period.

Great advice, exactly what I wanted to hear. I like the method of OCing and actual game heat-testing better than running some ATITool test. I have Half-Life 2: Episode 2, on max settings with 4x AA & 16x AF, the game is beautiful and runs @ just over 100FPS. That's w/ a +100MHz overclock on just core/mem, I never got a chance to try the +300/+350/+500 on a real game, will return results soon. 80C max is a good temp to stop at, correct? Is 85C or 90C pushing it?

Surprised? Doesn't the 9800M pretty much break 10000 in 3DM06? I'd kill for that card, you don't even need to OC. My CPU is the T9400 (2.53GHz, L2 6MB). And I dont "turn it into a 9600M", at all. geForce drivers downclock my 3D performance heavily. I just use Dell's stock Quadro drivers and get higher performance than I do w/ geForce drivers. I was surprised to find out NVIDIA system tools can overclock this Quadro in all 3 sliders. & yes, the M4400 comes with the 1700M as well as an option, but its +$500. Ridiculous to me, when Ive already overclocked the 770M better than the 1700M for free, and the heat stays under control.

I've made it into the 9400s. You need to put a X9100 in it and tweak the crap out of it to get to 10000. I don't have the time or funds E-wrecked has. I was surprised you ONLY got to 8000+ with your OC, since the 9800 will do 8400+ stock and 8700+ with DOX or XFastest drivers and no OC. But the 770M explains it. While built on the same core as a 9600M, Quadro sacrifices some shaders in exchange for things like hardware support for line and wireframe anti-aliasing (not to be confused with full scene anti-aliasing), Imbedded OpenGL logic operations, up to 8 clip regions (Geforce supports one), and some other stuff. But probably the biggest is that they test the crap out of the card and the drivers. They are very high quality, which may explain why you can OC so high.
