I've noticed a distracting amount of light bleed through in the black area around the DVD window during full screen playback. If you run it it a window then of course there isn't a problem. If it were consistent it wouldn't be so distracting, but it is not. Some areas are brighter than others. I'm also having problems with the drive stuttering intermittently using AC or DC power. I've checked DMA in device manager and the drive is set. Anyone else noticed these problems or have solutions[?]

    Thanks, Dan

I have no problems with my 7422GX like this...

Is the dvd a burned copy or factory?
Also what type of playback software are you running?
As well keep in mind that XP SP2 is not compatible with
all current software on the market.[} :)]

I think the problem with playback was simply from running too many resources, but the backlight issue still bothers me. It has a very pronounced white arc or glow, from left to right, at the bottom of the display that distracts when watching a full screen DVD. Is this considered normal or should I exchange it while I still can? It is very noticeable in a dark room, much less pronounced in a full lit environment. Is this the nature of a laptop beast and am I being too picky? I have a Viewsonic VX900 on my desktop and have never experienced this.

You may also notice this backlight arc when booting up.
Set up your lcd settings in the cmos to full bright first.
    then try the trick below

One of the tricks you can try is adjusting the contrast in the
ATI tools of your view settings. After you set your cmos to the brightest setting.

After playing with these 2 configurations back and forth the 'WHITE ARC' of light seems to tone done a bit.

    Give it a try...

Thanks for the info but no matter how I adjust it still remains. The weird part is that when I cold boot in the morning it is not visible on the boot screens. If I reboot after a few minutes of warmup it will be there. The only time it is really visible is when trying to watch DVDs or dark areas of games. I have managed a DVD workaround by decreasing the 7422 brightness 4 clicks from full and increasing the PowerDVD brightness, contrast & saturation settings +6. This evens out the brightness and adds richness to the colors and black. I am going to BestBuy and check the backlight and color balance on their display model. I've also noticed that no matter how I angle the screen, my display is slightly brighter and bluer in color at the bottom than the top. Don't get me wrong...I like the 7422. The problem is that I'm a graphic designer and display imperfections bug me much more than the average user. I just want to make sure that I don't have a problem with my 7422 that may get worse over time. I have a week left to exchange it if I can justify there really is a problem.

    Thanks, Dan

    Dan,

Not that you will get any help from gatway about this problem, but you might want to call them and see if they have any info about settings they might suggest.

Checking Best Buy might be a good point to see if this is a problem on the demo model.... Please keep us posted!
