Greets all! Had my 7422gx 1 week and am way pleased. Thought it a good idea to order a few additional accessories. Called Gateway Sales for an extra ac power adaptor after finding the on-sale universal Kensington I bought at Comp-USA to not have the correct tip (Doh). Got here in 2 days, and was pleased about the speed, but not please to find that the sales rep (as nice as she was to me on the phone) HAD SENT A UNIT THAT ALSO IS NOT APPLICABLE.

Seems I cannot find the right tip, and worse, Gateway is not very aware of the parts order number, specs, or compatibility of it's retail-sold units and will be unable to locate or even identify the right adapter. The tip for this adapter cones narrower at the tip, a scribed indent in the the metal just past the flare, has a thin single pin receptacle, and the plastic pin sleeve has 2 notches 180 degrees apart. The adapter as supplied in the retail box has a 3 prong power cable and plug, and was wrapped with a blue band that said "90 WaTTS". Says: Gateway; model 0220A1890.

Interestingly, the GW rep "assured" me the model sent, GW part number 2521757 (that's for the Gateway M-520) would work. She, as well as I, was questioning why her company info had a 120 watt adapter listed as what was to be included in the retail box, but now upon arrival the 'dapter is 2 prong and wrong tip!

Guess I'll call GW and give them the id numbers in hopes they might have the actual useable adapter, and check the Arima site (tho they are so cryptic, it's hard to suss out). Any suggestions/outlets for this item?

P.S. -Thanks for all the members' great info and advice on this site.

Please let me know if you resolve this issue. I ordered the AC adaptor from Gateway that they said was corect but had the same problem you did. Now, though a return is no problem, they are giving me the run around about what AC adaptor is correct. After an hour with two people on line they finally said they didn't have a clue and to try calling back tomorrow. If you get a Gateway part number for the full adaptor, (cord and adaptor) please let us know.

Go to eMachines. The adaptor for the m68xx series is what you want. They are the same base machine from Arima.

    First PC = Vic-20, 8" 128KB Home-Brew Floppy Drive ... Current Rig = eMachines m6805 ... Quantum Leap?

Was on phone FIVE HOURS with Gateway tonight. Solved the issue with the adapters, etc: If your SERIAL NUMBER on the 7422GX is alpha AND numeric, then it is a RETAIL product and you CANNOT get the traditional Gateway 1-800 customer service. You have to use a Pay-per-call service. But not all the Gateway people know that. So they try to answer or send parts. But some of the parts for the retail machines (ie, adapters) are different than for the machines bought online through Gateway, itself. After five hours, I actually found the part number for the adapters for the 7422GX -- but get this -- GATEWAY CANNOT GET THEM -- you have to go through the retail store where you purchased the machine -- or maybe the "600" number (pay for service for retail customers). Anyway, here's the part number and where to find it in the Gateway literature: Part # 102576 found on "The Source" (Gateway folks will know what that is) under "Gateway Retail Notebooks" under "Gateway 7422GX notebook" under "Components."
The phone number for RETAIL computer parts, etc. (like if you buy yours at BestBuy) is 1-605-232-2118. Hope this helps.....

19 Mar 2005 12:23:52 PM Cynthia Hinson says: I want the part for the laptop shown at the reference page I gave you at the beginning of this conversation.

19 Mar 2005 12:24:54 PM Cynthia Hinson says: You are quite incorrect. It will not fit the receptacle on the back of the laptop. I've already been sent one. And the "universal" tag refers to the plugs. My computer is a 90 Watt 4. 3 Amp
19 Mar 2005 12:25:19 PM Cynthia Hinson says: 70 watts is not 90 watts
19 Mar 2005 12:25:32 PM Gary_GWPR121 says: The one I recommend is a UNIVERSAL POWER ADAPTER that supports all 7000 Series Notebooks.

19 Mar 2005 12:26:29 PM Cynthia Hinson says: there is a fluke in your system.
    19 Mar 2005 12:26:55 PM Cynthia Hinson says: I need a 90 watt 4.9 Amp
19 Mar 2005 12:27:10 PM Gary_GWPR121 says: It is not available as of this moment, Cynthia.
19 Mar 2005 12:27:40 PM Gary_GWPR121 says: Cynthia, the one I recommend is a UNIVERSAL POWER ADAPTER that supports all 7000 Series Notebooks.
19 Mar 2005 12:28:24 PM Cynthia Hinson says: I am telling you there is a fluke in your system. The Gateway retail 7422GX takes a 90 Watt 4.9 Amp power adapter. I can't wait to post this to the chatrooms!!!!
19 Mar 2005 12:28:44 PM Cynthia Hinson says: Universal refers to the plug -- not the power wattage

19 Mar 2005 01:27:13 PM Cynthia Hinson says: absolutely -- and i've been sent one already that will not fit. The plug on the 102576 is 90 degree; the plug on my laptop is straight and has the gateway label on it.

19 Mar 2005 01:32:04 PM Cynthia Hinson says: Yes -- does Gateway not support its own products? I purchased it at BestBuy. Again, does Gateway not support its own product? Why would Best buy open a box that is sealed with a brand new laptop inside and CHANGE the cord that comes with it? It didn't happen. This is a GATEWAY LAPTOP and I want the cord that comes with it.
19 Mar 2005 01:33:02 PM Cynthia Hinson says: Are you suggesting that if I buy a Gateway product retail that I won't be able to get parts from it from Gateway? This is incredible and needs to be sent to my friend at Time Magazine.
19 Mar 2005 01:33:02 PM Mike_GWPR230 says: We do support our products and we do follow certain specifications on all our products shipped. If you check your support page at support.gateway.com and check your system

What I am going to do for you is that I will personally see to it that this issue be escalated to our lab for investigation. If they find out that we would have to send a different model of the power adapter I will make sure you would be one of the first to get one.

Here is the Gateway specs page (supposedly) for the 7422GX. But scrolling down, you will see that the power adapter is LISTED INCORRECTLY as 19 VDC, 6.3A, 120 W output, which is, of course, WRONG: http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Gateway/7305GZ/4204sp49.shtml

The input specifications for the 7422GX (look on the back of your laptop) is 18.5 volts and 4.9 amps -- and the adapter that comes with the laptop is 90 watts. There are three Gateway laptop adapters that are 90 watts but they have the wrong tip. Like an earlier poster in this discussion, I ordered the Gateway so-called "replacement" adapter for the 7422GX and received the wrong one -- one exactly like the one listed in the specs that you are questioning.
It may be that a 7422GX purchased retail has differences than one purchased online through Gateway. Mine was retail, and the online specs for an adapter are incorrect -- I know because I ordered one and it did not fit.

Thank you for this info. I also got sent the wrong adapter. I called the number below and they were very nice. My roommate's cat chewed through the orginal and it doesn't work anymore. They are sending me a new one FREE! I just need to send the old one back.
    Thanks again![ :D]

Yes -- I received a second adapter for my 7422GX, one that was EXACTLY like the first one, from BestBuy. All I did was go by the store, present my warranty folder, and the techie went to the back and GAVE me another one!

    Blessings!

Wow, I am going through the same pain now. I may just try and exchange the notebook with Best Buy. Did anyone find the right part?

Great to see you can get them replaced. But how about being able to purchase an ADDITIONAL one? Will try the service desk at BB - salesman knew only the rack Kensington universals. May just order the Emachines one and be done with it.

The techie in the BestBuy Geek Squad was going to order me a new one, but when I told him all the hassle I'd already been through, he just gave me one... so, I'm guessing that yes, they could have ordered it. But not sure...

I finally cooled off a bit after waiting 3 weeks for a return slip on the adaptor that they sent that was wrong. When I called to ask where the slip was I was told they didn't have a clue, but did I realize that the 15 day return window was now closed! I went balistic and in two day got the return slip. The adaptoer was returned via UPS yesterday. So, I went to my Best Buy store to order the correct adaptor and was given the phone number of Gateway, (the same number where the first WRONG part came from. I was told the "machine is too new and AC adaptors were not available yet" Sounds like Best Buy and Gateway make perfect bedfellows.

My issue is that the AC connector in the back of the laptop is shot, so I have to send it back, but I want an extra AC adapter anyway. I'll ***** and prob get a new one for free if the Geek squad guy has a clue what I'm talking about. Depends on how long they have been working on computers ;)

Yes, that little receptacle for the adapter doesn't seem to be very sturdy. I've noticed the same thing with the rear USB receptacles. The plug on this adapter is very tiny -- almost like the plug for earphones.. and it doesn't extend into the receptacle very far, which means it falls out all the time. Very annoying.

So you don't have a little clip on yours? Mine basically slides in and sort of clips into the ac adapter so it can't fall out easily, which I thought was kind of cool. It fits very snug and does not fall out, but the actual internal connecter is loose now. I have to twist it a bit to get the power to stay.
