I have a 7426GX and recently reformatted the hard drive and have installed XP. When I try and open the volume control i get an error that says "“There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add hardware.” I tried that but it does not do anything. I have no idea on what else I need to do to fix the problem any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like a nice friendly wIndows problem
    either
    A. look for drivers for your sound card or whatever it is
    or
    B. call tech support...
    or
    C. wait for someone who knows what the problem was
I had that problem once but it fixed istelf or soemthing, i dont remember exactly
it should ahve firmware....what OS was installed originally?

I have not been able to find any drivers that will fix the problem. I have talk with gateway tech support and downloaded the driver that they told me to but it still does not work.

Eheh, well, that is most certianly infuriating...
What OS did you have originally
That may have been an issue when you formatted the HDD, it might ahve messed it up in some obscure section of the hard drive, like an EISA partition taht wasn't reinstalled correctly, or it may have had an error when it was transferred
try to roll back, and you may have to spend ~$30 on driver cleaner software (search for it on google)
Driver cleaners make sure everything was uninstalled correctly when you update drivers and it may fix your problem

The laptop came with XP. I did not use the recovery disk when I reformatted because my laptop would never burn them properly, so i used a store bought copy of XP.

ah, well taht rules out a problem because it was an earlier version of XP, it was SP2 right, the store bought version
The original windows XP didn't support a lot of the things that SP2 does, but as its store bought, its probably the most recent version...hmmmm....
well that is certainly prerplexing, the only thing that i can think is that maybe the drivers didnt uninstall fully and theres two drivers on there, messing it up, which of course would require you to download a nice expensive driver cleaner, which is a pain....
sorry, i can't think of anything else, either try the driver cleaner or wait for someone who knows what exact problem you have to come around
I did a quick google and didnt find anything, so, good luck

Thank you for your help. I will keep that in mind if nobody else can come up with a solution.

I still have not been able to fix the problem. Can you recommend a driver cleaner? Or anything else that might fix the problem?
