Hey all. I'm a P-6831 owner and haven't been following Gateways releases of their laptop line. Coming back after an absence I see lots of helpful threads but all the new series numbers are confusing to me and now I dont know which are the successor to which?

Also it seems the 7801 is superior than the 7805? I would think the higher numbers would indicate a newer release?

Sorry for all the newbie questions, I'm just in a dilemma if I should upgrade to one of the newer laptops or not...

    My opinion:

The P-7801u was Gateway's planned first new system after the 7811, followed shortly by BestBuy's exclusive 7805u, which is identical except for the 1440 x 900 screen. They ran into a problem supplying BB with the contracted number of 7805's and substituted the 01's 1920 x 1200 screens to meet their contract.

The P-7807u has a slightly upgraded CPU (Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4GHz), but is otherwise the same system as the 7805u.

The P-7808u has the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000 2.0 GHz, a larger but slower HD - 500 GB (5400RPM) - and built-in Bluetooth, but other wise is the same as the 7805u.

I'm reading the little "u" as meaning US model.

To the others - did I get this right?

As for the order of the actual numbering system, the models began with the P-7811, so it almost appears that Gateway is simply picking numbers out of a hat.

    :)

    Looks good to me :D
I figured the "u" means USA as well.
And maybe the numbers are a code of leet!

7805 = TBOS, = To Be Outta Stock!
7801 = TBOL = To Be Offered Love!
7808 = TBOB = To Be Outta Bucks!

    Or maybe not... :p

Would you guys say that the 7801 is a decent enough successor to warrant a purchase? =)

Well I'm 16 and worked 120hours to buy this thing, so trust me, if I didn't think it was worth my money, I sure as heck would've returned it.
Been 2 and a half months now and I love it :)

Just purchased the p7801u also and everything from the build to the screen is amazing! I've downloaded three of the newest games so far (Tom Clancy's Hawk, Burnout Ultimate, and BioShock). It ran all the games on the highest resolution (1900 x 1200) and details effortlessly. The best part was when I played the Planet Earth series at 1080p using an external HD drive from Xbox. Puts my HP's high definition brightview screen to shame.

Also you might save a little money over the 7801u if you want the higher screen resolution. Go to your local BB and look for the 138 in the serial number. Those are the units that have the 1900x1200 screen. Plus they are about 100 cheaper then Newegg.

what do you mean over the 7801? Does BB carry a different version with the same specs?

Best Buy carries the P-7805u. It's basically the same specs except it's a WXGA screen. Some of the earlier models accidentally? shipped with WUXGA, like the P-7801u. Now it's pretty difficult to find one in-store. They're both great computers and the prices are similar enough.

Yep, the P-7805u is a Best Buy exclusive. Only difference anyone can determine is the screens between it and the 7801u, as anodos states.

In that case I think I will end up ordering the 7801 from Tigerdirect. Its about 100 more on there compared to BBs '05, it seems that the ones they currently have in BBs stock are 1440 resolution monitors.

did yougo to your local bestbuy for the serial number or the batch numbers? I went to mine and ended up with a 1900x1200 and they still have more.

BestBuy charges sales tax and TigerDirect does not in most states so it comes out about the same except for one very important thing. If your laptop needs to be replaced for any reason like a bad gpu, BestBuy will give a replacement laptop with the screen that's suppose to go with the p7805u. Hence losing the screen you worked so hard to find.
