    Hello,

I use my 7805u for audio apps and love it, my biggest complaint being the generic / Intel firewire chip. It's generally accepted in audio circles that a Texas Instruments chip is the best for FW Audio Interfaces.

I am wondering about the possibility of installing additional TI firewire through the (extra) mini Pci-e port. I'd assume that there would be a way to wire the chip to the existing connector already mounted on the machine.

The two problems that I am wondering about are:
    • These chips are anything but common - I've found 2:
    • I also am not sure if there is a full slot available in the 7805u, or if it is a "half" slot. I've read on these forums that its possible to replace the wireless to a "half" slot and use the full space for the new installation...

If anyone can comment on this I'd really appreciate it :)

Unfortunately, they are notoriously bad / incompatible with high end hardware, and having the extra connections makes me nervous in a performance setting.

    I've looked at this:
    http://rainrecording.com/1-877-MIX-RAIN/store/product.php?productid=16242&cat=289

which supposedly offers better more reliable compatibility, but if there's anyone out there that's pulled off the actual replacement, I think that'd be more elegant... Maybe too dangerous though.

Buy a NitroAV expresscard. They always use TI. They just work! Not the least expensive option, but the best for audio/video sampling/encoding.

Looks like it may have come down in price. I seem to recall spending $99 last year for the same card. If your firewire device is powered over the firewire cable, get a power supply. It plugs into the card on the side.
