bought a 7805 a few days ago, seriously considering returning it because the sound in it works like crap. I love the machine for its display and video capabilities but the soundcard in it must have been made by some daffy idiot from chumbawumba. The thing locks up constantly.

Are there any new drivers for it, I updated to the newest nVidia driver set that was available from the nVidia web site.

barring that, is it possible to install a new expresscard soundard that will nto do this, will a soundcard installed in the expresscard slot drive the internal speakers or will I be saddled with carrying external speakers as well to work around the sound card that came with this thing?

Sorry my post sounds so bad but I am extremely dissapointed in this thing.

Could you give more information? When exactly does it start "locking up" or "lagging"?

    Basic steps:
    Update your audio driver.
If that doesn't work, then return the laptop for a replacement.

okay... it seems to be fairly random, There is no real warning sign that it is about to freeze up. the audio driver is the newest available on the nvidia website. I would loathe returning the laptop to be replaced since I found a 1900x1200 screen which seems to be getting pretty hard to find.

it feels like either a driver issue or a directx compatibility issue to me, but I cannot say for sure why its happening.

    Try this:
Go to power options > High Performance > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > Hard Disk > Set both settings to "Never".

Restart. If the problem still persists, then update your audio driver from here:
    http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/ddaStep.asp?platform=10022&model=12253&st=browse

    Last Resort:
You could return, get a refund and get a 7801u from TigerDirect for the same price since it has a guaranteed 1920x1200 screen.

Check out my thread for instructions on getting the same price as a 7805u: Link

Did that work? I thought it was only the 7811s that had that problem.

okay - update, spent over an hour talking with gateway support back and fourth, trying to get a straight answer from then via both live chat and on the telephone. the quality and responsiveness of gateway support has convinced me utterly that not only do I need to return this laptop but I need to get something other than a gateway to replace it.

I know that computer manufacturer customer service is seldom lauded as being genuinely helpful but wow I have never been treated as though I am a drooling idiot by so many tech reps in a row in my life.

Suffice it to say that not only is this lappy going back but it is the very last gateway I will EVER buy.

I genuinely appreciate all of the help that everyone here has given, and I sincerely hope that everyone has better luck with gateway than I did.

    Now to find oiut if
    ASUS is any better :D

I personally just returned mine and just did the deal with tiger direct. If I see any more issues, I'll probably run down the same path of switching to the ASUS laptop. They are very reputable, but I'm not comfortable with the ASUS/ACER mix. It's a lot like Gateway/eMachines.

I am significantly more likely to trust an acer/asus combo than a gateway/emachines comb tbh...

I hope that things will go better with a different manufacturer at this point. gateway burned me really bad today and it is unlikely I will give them any repeat business.

How is Asus even compared to Acer? Asus is waaaay better than Acer and Gateway.
