You should be able to change the processor of any notebook, however:

It is not as simple as changing a Desktop CPU
    It may void your warranty

it is unbelievably easy to change the cpu on the FX laptops... I changed mine easily... warranty wise, I hope the Magnusson-Moss act comes into play should the need arises

Extremely easy to change the processor...I changed mine to a T9800 from extremeprocessors via ebay...he was awesome to deal with and gave me a great price...you can haggle a lit bit...installed the new one in less than 10 minutes and used Arctic Silver for thermal paste..Good Luck!

Magnusson does apply, however it doesn't necessarily protect you fully. Because of the complex nature of a laptop it would prevent them from say not warantying the unit because the LCD failed (clearly unrelated to a cpu). If the motherboard died though they could say you used a CPU it wasn't intended to have installed, or that you caused the problem while installing the cpu. Without gateways blessing it would be risky at best. Cars are similar, for example if you put nitrous on your car they could throw out the waranty on the entire drivetrain, but if the power windows broke they'd still be obligated to fix them.

Which would be better for a cpu upgrade on a P-7805u a T9600 or a T9800, has anyone had heat problems with these?

If money isnt an object the T9800 has the same TDP as the T9600 with faster clocks, but the P9600 has the larger cache, higher clocks (though not as fast as those two) and has the same TDP as the P8400 the laptop comes with at 25W versus 35 for the T series.

If you put one of the 9100x CPU's in the laptop, do you have to undervolt it? I read some people did this, but I have no idea how you even can adjust the voltage and what the benefit is? I'm assuming heat, but does it affect anything else or cause other laptop problems.

    Good thread.

Changing the RAM to 8G or adding/replacing an HD appears fairly easy on the P-7805u.

Sounds like swapping out the CPU isn't difficult, either. Anyone know of a step by step with pictures on this? Any trick to safely removing the P8400?

Same with removing the DVD and installing a Blu-Ray drive. Any specific make/model Blu-Ray drive known to work? Is there a step by step on the Net? Can you change out the trim on the Blu-Ray drive so it uses the trim from the DVD drive being replaced?

For me, a t9800 running 3dmark06 at default settings with a slight gpu overlock 700/900/1700 and my score was about 10,400. Oh, the cpu was not overclocked, undervolted though.

I assume you have a WXGA panel? You were probably running at 1280x800. These panels can't support 3dmark06's default res, lol.

    3Dmark06's default is 1280x800.
And no p-7805u's have been reported with actual WXGA. Only WUXGA+ and WXGA+ (1920x1200 and 1440x900).

it's 1280x800 only if your screen isnt capable of 1024 lines vertical, otherwise its 1280x1024, and i believe the poster in question actually has a 7801u from the egg, so he definately has a 1920x1200 so that should be a 1280x1024 score unless he has pro and changed settings.

Thanks for the correction, Mike. Just noticed it was 1024 instead of 800.
