Hi there, have a 7805-u that id like to power in a car.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=139014

was wondering if this thread (that leads to a defunct product) is good? I see Kensington has some new models out that supple 70 or 120 (i assume i'd need the 120)

but was wondering if anyone has tried this, if the supplied tips work with the 7805-u, and if anyone has had thier laptop, converter, or car abttery catch on fire lol

    thanks!

if your planning of running that monster on your car's battery it wont run or get ready to have a dead battery in a few hours. anyways, i have a 150w Kensington power inverter in my car, it wont run my gateway 6831 with my car engine off but it will run while its on. but i dont want to add more stress to my car so i dont use it and its just too bulky. so on long trips i have a HP 2510p with a 9 cell battery (7-9 hour battery life) to watch movies on or some really light gaming.

no my car's battery is not on fire or my inverter, or laptop. only my HP can charge the battery while its off anyways. i know its not the same laptop model but i have upgrade my 6831 to a t8300 so it uses around the same watts vs your 7805-u. and yea even with the small HP i have drawn my car's battery many times in the past with the engine off. i try not to do it anymore.

but i did use my 6831 on a 5 hour car ride to California last year and the car and battery, laptop, power inverter where all fine. no smoke or nonething.

no but if you want go ahead. all i am saying is not using it while the car is off and that 120 watts is what you need to power that thing. i got 150 cuz i also power other things with it.

while the car is running that alternator should have no problems supplying the current needed. (think of all the sub woofers they toss in them) If your super worried take it to a car audio shop and have them install a 12v compasitor. But honestly you should be find. If your blowing fuses left and right i would install a compasitor and have a car socket wired to it.

Also, I have a Vector Imobile 100W converter that powered my HP DV9000 on performance. im not sure how it would work for the 7805 but i can try to find time to give it a go.

Its a small converter about 3x5" BUT it has a built in cooling fan that works great!

ah, so if the car is running, it won't drain the battery?

any advice on a brand? i was looking at the kensington 120v one (about 80 dollars)

i would only be running it while the car is on.

how many watts is it? you want to make sure your at or over 100, the more the better. Mine is 100. lill try mine out playing crysis once i get a chance.

other than that just google the make and model and see what everyones saying about it. You def. want to make sure it says cool. So prop it up on a hard surface and make sure it had ample air flow

dont you need to hard wire that to your battery though?

Thats the reason i only bought the 100w so i could just plug it in.

Check the fuse rating for your lighter. 120 Watt bricks are used for our series. For our laptops a 150 watt inverter, 12.5 amps at 12 volts, should be good so nothing is running hot. Most cars run at 14vdc so this helps ease off on the current draw. A 100 watt inverter will be running flat out to supply a 120 watt brick at 14 volts, fail at 12 volts.

The laptop will only draw max current when gaming, so a 100 watt inverter will be good for casual use.

i have powered a 6831 with it just fine since Jan. and other things for over 2 years with that inverter. just dont power it with the engine off like i did last night. i powered my baby laptop for 2 hours with it and my battery was dead in the morning.

I am an avid gamer, and OC my GPU to 716/900/1800, do you think I should upgrade to the Targus 180W? Would that improve my gaming performance in any way?
