SO my 7805 is always plugged into AC power, I use it as a desktop replacement. The only time it would be on battery power is on an airplance etc..With this being said, I have my battery/power options set to custom/performance mode.

Here is my question. With my setup, should I disable powermizer to get the max benefit from my GPU? During gaming, and when the GPU is in use, I would obviously like it to be full blast. BUT...I dont want the GPU full blast when idling/low applications..I guess I am worried about heat if the GPU is on full blast NONSTOP! Currently I max at 74 degrees and idle around 40-48. Ive read that powermizer switches back on when on battery power so thats good. read below.

Can someone explain this to me and if it is a good idea to disable? Thanks

On Vista change the registry key PerfLevelSrc from x'3333' to x'3322' with regedit. This forces the GPU to run at max when plugged in,

but allows powermizer to still work with batteries.

x'2222' will keep GPU at max on batteries or mains.

The registry key is found in:
    \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{**unique to you for nvidia**}\0000\PerfLevelSrc

    working great ! !

    From NvidiaExtends battery life
Intelligently adapts performance based on a user's needs so it saves power even when the notebook is plugged into the wall
Runs in the background to provide the best balance of performance and battery life
Helps the notebook run cooler and quieter under normal operating conditions by dissipating less heat in the GPU

So THIS sounds like the GPU would heat up quite a bit during idle etc..bc in never downthrottles!

    Another post on the web
Before everyone turns off Powermizer, make sure this is the only option left to you, as running at 100% all the time would strain even the best Laptop cooling out there, and is not needed for Aero or light 3D applications like WPF/Silverlight, etc...

Can anyone back these claims up...sounds like disabling powermizer is NOT a good idea...?

It is a choice you have to decide for The P78xx's have a seperate cooling fan for the GPU so unless something is totally amiss then you shouldn't have dangerously high heat issues. It will however cost more in power/money to run the laptop. Also more stress equals a shorter life span. These chips may turn out to be highly reliable so maybe you'd get 19 years out of it instead of 20, no one really knows.

Powermizer also though slows the video memory too. While this has little effect to say AERO it does effect video playback, especially Flash Video. ome moderate games benefit from having powermizer off as it tries to get to the middle setting durring the game, this is rare though.

A funny thing happened on the way through the registry. It turns out there is no PerfLevelSrc. Would anyone care to screenshot the location so I can view it?

    Thanks

Is there anyway to have set powermizer to max when gaming then set back to normal when not? I guess I am asking if there is any freeware that allows you to play with the powermizer or if I can save a shortcut on my desktop to the powermizer settings. It would be nice to have it on full blast (disabled) while gaming and on normal savings mode (enabled) when not/at idle. Is this possible? Thanks!

No, powermizer wont work in windows 7 or vista because microsoft simply didnt include it in there registry, this is how you do it....

Some people seem to be abit confussed..
1 any driver can be downloaded, it doesnt matter, you can input them manually and get powermizer to work
2 Windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit or vista OS, the powermizer will not work until you input them manually because they are simply not in the registry

Heres a quick guide how to solve all your problems
1 Press the windows key and R key on the keyboard
2 This will bring up the run window
3 Type regedit and click ok
4 This will open the registry editor
    5 Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
6 Then click the following, SYSTEM,currentcontrolset, control,Video
7 You will see lots of numbers, open each one up and click the 0000, your looking for the one thats shows a massive list on the right, this is where we need to input the data
8 When you have found the right one, right click and new tab will come up, click new
9 Input PerfLevelSrc as the name now repeat the above for the following..
    PowerMizerEnable
    PowerMizerLevel
    PowerMizerLevelAC
10 In the list you should now have this...
    PerfLevelSrc
    PowerMizerEnable
    PowerMizerLevel
    PowerMizerLevelAC
11 Right click PerfLevelScr and press modify, then input 3333 as the value (Modify IN DWORD)
12 For PowerMizerEnable, PowerMizerLevel, PowerMizerLevelAC the value should be 0, you can check this by right clicking on them and pressing modify, they should already be at 0, if not change them to 0
13 Now close it down (top corner x) and reboot
14 Now download powermizer switch from this forum and it will work with windows 7 and any nvidia driver, if powermizer switch doesnt work (it should do though)you can turn it off manually from the above, instead of putting 3333 as the value, input 3322 for ac off and battery on or 2222 to turn it off on both ac power and battery (3333 is powermizer on), the good thing about powermizer swich is you dont have to do it manually so you can have it on when on the net and off for gaming, works great for throttling issues or low fps/lag
    Enjoy

Its just that powermizer tool will only work if the above registry entries are present. Without those powermizer tool doesnt do anything.
