Hey guys, long time reader first time poster... the wealth of knowledge on this forum is amazing. Hope someone can help me out.

I just picked up a 7805u (with the LG lcd) and I am trying to create the "System Restore Factory Default Disc" but the burn process fails before the first DVD finishes (error message read "Burn Fail Error Code 9004"). After wasting 9 Sony DVD-R dvds I tried calling Gateway support (3 times so I could talk to 3 different support representatives)... they didn't have a clue what I was talking about and therefore no idea how to help fix it. Next, I tried to burn CD's (Maxell Premium Grade)... again the burn failed, but this time it failed during the second CD that was inserted (error message read "Burn Fail Error Code 431") To make things even more confusing, I was able to create the "Driver and Application Backup Disc" on the first try using the aforementioned DVD-R with no problem. I have spent about 6 hours in attempts to get this to go. In 2 hours from now I need to get up and go to work :mad2: Anyone have any thoughts or ideas with this?

    Thanks

Sony media should not have that high failure rate, so it is more than likely client side. Search the Gateway/OEM Drive Manufacture sites to see about any updates pertaining to this issue. You may want to try another burning application, one from filehippo.com may work. If none of the above pan out, you may want to try installing a small partition with linux to check if you can burn in another operating system, thus pegging your current os/setup as the issue. On a side note, nero may have something in their trial suite that can help troubleshoot what is going on, but I am not 100% sure. Sorry to not be the answer, but hopefully a jump start. Good luck.

The most important one is the app/driver disc anyway.... the system restore is just Vista + everything in the app/driver .... you can (like what I did) restore with any Vista Installer disc (just use your OEM license on the sticker underneath).

Have you tried it in safe mode? There might be something running that is stopping the burn from completing while you are running the system in full access.

Other than that i havent a clue, you could always use acronis to make a back up image of your system and keep that safely tucked away on an external hard drive. That way you never have to go through the reinstall process you can just keep the fresh clone and not worry about it anymore

    SUCCESS! :p

First I tried to burn in Safe Mode, however, the Gateway Recovery program wouldn't allow it.

I booted back into Normal Mode and decided to try a different brand and media type for DVD. This time I chose to use my Maxell DVD-RW which only burns at 2x speed BUT IT WORKED WOOHOO

Thanks everyone for your ideas and hopefully if anyone else receives the same errors as I did they can jump straight to a high end DVD-RW and complete the process without wasting as much time and media discs as I did.

OK, I am having the same exact problem. The first disc will burn to 100%, but before it verifies itself as complete the error message comes in. I tried burning with Sony DVD+RW. I, too, was able to burn the apps restore disc on the first try with no issues. I've tried running CCleaner on my system in hopes that it would remedy the error, but with no success. Any ideas?

i had just experienced this just last night, but i used maxell dvd+R's and i two dics failures when trying to burn the app data not the recovery. i just chalked it up to faulty DVD's which is not uncommon, especially with CDrs, well CDR for me first time using DVD+R.

I have gotten it to burn finally though, i was worried that something was wrong as well

When I tried different brands of DVD's (both Sony and Verbatim) and different types (-R and +R) I received ERROR 501 on my computer, no longer ERROR 9004. So, I do believe that it is a question of the media being used moreso than any possible registry problem of the computer itself.

Solution - I went to Best Buy and burned a full-length recovery DVD (using Maxell DVD-R) from the store demo!!

I have the same issue too, but as long as I can reformat with a standard OEM Vista disc (which I have laying around), I am happy! I was just afraid they might pull some sort of oem specific key on us :(.

    *edit*

Tested the Gateway key on some SP1 OEM images I had and it works :D!
