Recently the backlight has been going out when not powered by AC. The symptoms are:

When opening the lid the backlight is on, cuts off after about 3 seconds sometimes. Other times it will stay on for a good while then cut off altogether. When repeatedly opening and closing the screen it seems to flicker between different levels of backlight before failing altogether. Never goes out when powered in.

This behavior began soon after playing Borderlands for the first time. Before playing Borderlands I had graphical glitches in Chrome ever and then, but no backlight issues. When playing borderlands the cpu and nb chipsets get up to 70c max, the gpu can get up to about 85c, neither of these temps are unusual.

This is not the stock screen, I replaced the stock 1440x900 with an LG 1920x1200. Absolutely no issues until now.

    Any ideas?

Huh. That's weird. A connection(s) might have come loose or something in your screen, or maybe a setting somewhere?

Not sure how graphically intensive Borderlands is, but I play NFS:Underground, Shift and NBA 2K10 snd my temps only reach about 65C. TOPS! 85 is Hot. Thats 185F. You can cook beef at 180. As for the backlight, could be connections(as stated earlier) or the inverter may be going out. I've had no issues with mine but have seen it on other lappies. The inverter that is. Course if it's under warranty, send it back.

wow, my gpu idles at 63c. did you add some thermal compound to yours?

Either way, I don't think the backlight is related to the gpu, chances are it is the inverter. guess ill have to get a new one, and I don't think sending it in for warranty would work since this display isn't stock. However i may get away with sending it in with the old lcd and this inverter and having them replace it, thatll have to wait until winter break tho cuz i cant do work without this thing

    thanks for the advice!!

I am pretty sure the inverter and the screen are paired but if you can get the 2 to work together then they may do that.

Anyways as far as temps go my gpu idles at 45C (stock) but while playing Borderlands it shot up to 97C (yep 207F) during the last gaming session. Since the system is stock I'll allow the card to fry if it does and replace it. If the gateway warranty goes past then Best Buy will have to replace the card or replace the laptop (extended warranty). I don't think the fans are at issue on my case because when I was done playing it quickly cooled down to idle temperature within a few minutes and settled at 40C-45C.

    P.S. - Using nvidia beta 195.39 drivers.

The inverter isn't paired with the lcd. The 1920 didnt come with one and I had to use the old one. I've already swapped out the screens, putting the old on back in there and the problem persists, so its very likely an inverter issue. Good news is I can send the thing in, of course I'm assuming its under warranty. What is the manufacturing warranty on these things anyway?

I think the warranty is 1 year.

The problem could be the switch that detects whether the lcd is open or not, although I don't know why that would only be problematic while on battery.

We'll its gotten worse now, it happens while on or off battery, its just sometimes when its on AC I can keep it lit, but its never lit on battery. Thank god the warranty is a year, though it might actually be easier to just order another inverter

If you can find one. They are usually pretty cheap, but then again, I haven't had to replace one on a comp that new. Get GW to do it. But I understand your frustration. I have some trash or something on the inside of my screen, looks like dead pixels but not. Wierd. I'd rather just live with it than send it back and do without for a month.
As for the GPU temp, use to idle at 60C till I propped the back up about a half inch high. No mods or paste used. Everything stock with 186.81 and Win 7.
