I have had my 7805u for about 3 months now, bought new from Tigerdirect.. So two nights ago i was sitting there using it and poof it just shuts off. I turned it back on and it worked fine for the rest of the night.. The next day (yesterday it did this same thing a couple more times) Then it started doing it everytime I got into windows or sometimes after 5-10 mins.

So i called Gateway support and my nightmare begins.. Granted I called on Christmas Eve, but i seriously hope it's different on non holidays.. The people there can BARELY speak English. And they are just programmed to say the same answers no matter what you say to them.

When i remove my cable and run off the battery only it seems to work fine, but when i plug the power cord back in that's when the shut offs happen, so i tell the technician that i think it's either the Power cord, Adapter, or the Power supply. He tells me to change sockets, which i did. It cut off again which i moved it to the next socket over, which i'm beginning to wonder if it was the socket because I have it in my bedroom now (PLUGGED IN 5 mins and counting)

But anyway the next step he had me do was a Last Known Good Configuration. Still Crashed...

Next step He told me to do a clean install of Windows 7, And i said man I'm going to loose all my files.. He said back them up and I told him i can't do that if my laptop won't stay on for more than 2 mins.... I said I really think it's hardware issue and told him i work on computers for a living... He said something that kinda sounded like well sir in order to take it to the next step you must do this. So i said fk it and went ahead and did a clean install, it shutdown halfway through the install... This is when i discovered taking the power cord out and running it off the battery MIGHT keep it on. So i reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled win7 clean.. I hooked the power cord back up and poof Shutdown.

So i call back once again and they tell me I have to ship it to them, with no power cord for them to service it...

I can't shed light on how frustrating dealing with Gateway support was, It was by far the worst I've dealt with in my life, enough so that i will never buy or recommend another Gateway for as long as i live...

I guess both sockets may have shorted or something? not sure i'm going to leave it plugged in my room for a while and make sure it doesn't shut off again, but I wonder if it was the socket was it surging my laptop or something? I wonder if it did any damage? Should i go ahead and send it in if it doesn't shut off anymore??

Sorry for the long thread guys, all help is appreciated..

    thanks

If the AC had just cut out you would have reverted to battery. Kind of works like a built in UPS. If it is just popping off usually it is the BIOS and over heat protection. I would look into HW monitor and watch the sensors. Boot and run off battery then plug it in and see what it does.........

well, it's on its way to Acer Repair center now.. Just to let everyone know incase you didn't Acer bought out Gateway and moved customer service to India. Which is nothing but a nightmare.... I will never buy or recommend anyone getting either one of these brands for as long as i live...

Man, check with the serial number if the laptop is refurbished, tiger direct sells refurbished and may be a mistake.

it's not refurb. it was brand new... It's being fixed under Gateway's Manufacturer warranty. Just the process of getting it fixed is ridiculous..

with hp if i told them it was doing this and told them it was a hardware issue, they would have been fine with me taking out the Hard drive and sending them the laptop..

I deal with HP on a daily basis, well not that our laptops break every day, but when they do, it's a lot easier and WAY less frustrating process. They've never told me to format and re-install windows.. When i keep saying it's a hardware issue. If it was a software issue then i would have never called them in the first place...
