Dire news today, i noticed that my gpu fan was not spinning at all (i have been having overheating problems for a while now, i have recently bought ICD7 etc.) I have not yet taken the laptop completely apart (never done it yet) so I do have a minor hope that something like hair is jamming the fan. I did some google searching and found relatively few people that had a fan completely stop. I did notice also that the fan seperates from the main GPU. I was wondering perhaps if somehow i was lucky enough that there was a seperate parts number.. I did a fair amount of looking and haven't found one yet, which is discouraging. I was wondering if any of you had any similar experiences, or knew if there was a way to replace a fan on what otherwise seems to be a functioning 9800m gts.

    Thanks in advance,

if you blow air inside the vent does it spin the fan? I ask as if you can spin it that way it may not be seized...............

actually, when i attempt to blow on it, it does not move. I can insert a thin metal piece and manually move it however.

You aren't still using the laptop are you? I'd refrain from using it so you don't fry the GPU. If it spins fine when you manually hit the blades then maybe the power connection came loose.

Your best bet would be to disassemble it and see if you can find the problem yourself. Hopefully its just the power connection because I can't seem to find any GPU fan replacements, only CPU replacements. :/

You have dust and build up around the fan's shaft and its causing the lock up more likely than not.

You can either follow the disassembly guild and use that as a way to do a through cleaning of the machine or you can use a toothpick and q-tips with a little bit of 95%+ rubbing alcohol to clean the area around the fan's shaft to try to remove the dust buildup.

The fans that gateway use dont have alot of power so tend to get stuck as the build up starts getting wrapped up inside the middle and eventually that will cause the fan to stop working.

Its also possible the fan is dead, but in about 99% of these cases all you need to do is a very good cleaning (more than just compressed air) and you can get the fan working again.

    Hope this helps :)
