First and foremost, a word of thanks to azrickster for his excellent guide on tearing apart the 78xx series laptops.![]()
So I decided to add an internal bluetooth module to my 7805u. I figured while I was in the laptop I should do some PM on it, clean out the dust bunnies, and take the time to replace the factory TIM on the GPU.
While I was in there though something happened that in retrospect kind of sheds some light on an issue I've noticed.
I've noticed that my GPU fan would kick in and sputter during light use for no reason. I did notice on occasion that I'd get some video related glitches (like the video hanging and restarting spontaneously) too.
What I had found when I tore my system apart and took off the GPU heat pipe is that one of the mounting points for the heat pipe on the motherboard had literally broken off! It was pretty simple to fix with a butane soldering iron, but it would explain why I was getting some weirdness every now and then (the HS wasn't making proper contact with the GPU).
After fixing the mounting point and applying new TIM (AS5), the fan no longer kicks into high gear for no reason. The intermittent graphical glitches have disappeared too.
I'm not saying that this is the cause of all the problems people may be experiencing, but if you're having some weirdness for no reason, it may be worth taking a peek inside your system to make sure everything's ok.
