I posted this in the 7805u thread, but decided it'd be better off posted in a new thread.

Was curious if anyone else was running into this problem. I've had the laptop for about 3 days now and today when i went to play World of Warcraft, it ran well for about 5 min (50-60fps) then it dropped to about 6fps. I than shut the laptop off for about 30 min and turned it back on and put HWMonitor on and started to play once again. This is what I got.

    GeForce 9800M GTS
    GPU Core : Min-52C(125F) // Max-112C(223F)

This was the only reading I found that was abnormal.

I also ran another test and the same thing happened. Pretty much identical temps for the GPU. When the GPU temp hit 110 C the frame rate dropped dramtically to the point where it was unplayable. Once again the time frame was about 5 min to go from 52 to 110.

I am also using a cooling pad and am in a very open area.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

If you bought it at a local best buy, I guess if it were me I'd try and exchange it. (assuming they have one in stock) Does the GPU fan seem to be running at all? And if so, is there heat coming from the left side vent?

223 F is above boiling temperature. That is extremely hot...the components lifespan will lessen and they won't perform as well. Exchange it and get a notebook cooler such as the NZXT cryo LX.

The fan itself dosen't seem to be putting out too much air at all or making much noise at all. Not much air is coming out of that side either.

that fan should be honking. Return it ASAP or have thier people look into it, could be the fan just isn't plugged in. In my other thread I have the covers off and it looks like the fan plug is right by the wireless card.

Hm. Looks like I'll have to take it in then. The fan is definitely not turning the speed up when the temp increases on the GPU.

    Thanks again.

Just wondering, but is there any chance the installation of software would have done this? Was curious because up until the point of me installing Neverwinter Nights 2 i didn't have a single problem. Then while I was running NWN2 it began to overheat and then the other games did as well. Would that possibly change anything?

Don;t use your cooling pad and just put a dvd box or something that thick under your battery which will bring your laptops butt alittle bit up. Try it again like that. Some coling pads force the air to the wrong direction which causes the computer overheat.

When you're not stressing the gpu, it automatically downclocks itself, so its not generating much heat. When you boot up a 3d game, BAM! it goes up to the max clockspeeds.

lol yes, gaming on the battery will not yield very good results, also there is a guide kicking around that will help you disable powermizer (downclocks gpu on battery to save energy)

You can still game without it, but will see much lower battery life.

A gaming laptop gives you the ability to have one computer that you can game with at home but still take with you for standard computer uses.

I haven't seen any change in battery life in mine, I've had it plugged in all but maybe 30 hours over the last 6 months that I've had it.

Alright sorry for the belated response. The heating pad im using is a rocketfish, Im in the process of just running it a tad elevated at the moment. But the main problem I believe is the fact the fan dosen't kick on at all. It runs at a low speed all the time but never ramps up when the demand on the card increases.

Also the start up temp of the laptop is around 50C. Which id imagine is notably high as well. I'm just gonna take it to best buy in the morning and let them figure it out.

How is your GPU still working after running at that temp

That is definitely abnormal and you should return your laptop.

The rocketfish blower is blowing the right way. It dosent have to do with the cooling pad. when that's running I can reduce the temp on the GPU by about 3-6 degrees when idling. The problem is the fans not running.

No laptop cooler will make that much of a difference, return it or send it out for service.

As an update, I went and had it replaced. As it turns out the fan was not working at all on the GPU.

Just the fan? Or the whole laptop? And if the whole laptop, did you get a good screen? (wuxga / lg)
