This is it! I bought a quad core last night -- a QX9300. OEM.
I couldn't find an OEM Q9100 or Q9000, so I spent my own hard earned cash to buy an OEM QX9300 quad core for your viewing pleasure.
It should arrive sometime this week or early next week. The seller is US based and the CPU was pulled from a brand new machine.
I will be making the implant as soon as I get it--
I will take step by step pictures demonstrating the deed.
[Insert twilight zone, jaws, haloween, pop goes the whistle or your favorite suspense theme here].
Will it be successful or not?
Once and for all, to settle the quad core upgrade myth for the 780X series---
Stay tuned.

...and yes, my 7805u came with the mythical .17 BIOS---
-
No.
But it will sure as h3ll look good in that Sager 8662 you're getting soon. -
Please do not rep beg, it is against forum rules.

P-7805u + NP8662 FTW!

Good luck!

I don't think he is going to run into heat issues. The heat sync on the 7808 is the same right? If so it isn't going to be an issue. I think it is either going to work or not work. If you do get it working this thread will light on fire.
I'd really like to get my hands on this bios. -
I agree that this thread will light up if it works. Please keep us updated.
-
How about now?
Now? -
-
Are we there yet? haha

Okey dokey.

I really don't know what to think anymore...
I'll keep everyone updated-
Right now I'm leaning towards "it won't work" side.
I think Gateway may relent later on (or some hacker takes interest and "fix" the BIOS) when quad core becomes the norm and release a compatible BIOS- But I won't be holding my breath anymore-
I spent about $500 for this quad core- Hopefully, I can use it in the Clevo M860ETU (the myth around the 15" chassis is the heat issue, so we'll see) if it doesn't work in the 7805u. -
No quad support for the 780X series---
see my post here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=303626&page=117 -
So, are we utimately saying that there is a physical difference between the 7805u and the 7808u system boards?
Or, is it still possibly a BIOS issue? -
It is clear as day that Gateway won't support Quad Core for the current 78XX owners, nor are they obligated to---
If you want quad core, it is best to buy the laptop makers who supports it...The FX series (exception of the overpriced 7808) is strictly dual core-- -
Not exactly k9hydr4 -
since the P-7808u is Quad Core, my question remains valid.
Maybe someone else can answer it? -
- A 7808 owner could buy a Q9100 and plunk it in (option at present unlikely, given the already high price tag of the 7808).
- Wait for Gateway for another BIOS update (good luck on this one).
If it's the motherboard, then you already know the answer: Still no quad for the current 780X owners. -

But I guess that's the whole point isn't it? Otherwise we'd all be happy with a netbook. -

Sorry to hear the quads didnt work. I was rooting for you.
The 7808 would be an amazing deal if it came with the 1920x1200 screen. (still a decent deal though)
Was hoping the 7805 would accept it. I guess i'll be waiting until later this year for the nehelams after all -

I am curious to see what they did from .08 to .17 bios with the thermal tables and power management tables. Looking at all the quads vs dual cores I see that x9100 is 44w(tdp) and the quads are 45w. I am wondering if it doesn't recognize the 1w difference. Thermal tables are effected by the watts. I wonder if there are 2 versions of .17 like .17a and .17b? also I wonder if the 7808 can run a dual core fine?

For all we know, it could be a nanosized leprechaun that turns a switch in the motherboard that lets it know which processor to use. Unless someone is willing to take their 7808 and/or 7805 completely apart, we won't know if there is a difference between the two-- -

k9hydr4 said: ↑The Q9000 is also 45W. As far we know, the 7808 owners who posted so far have the regular .17 BIOS. All quads are virtually identical except to the cache (6MB in the Q9000 vs 12MB in for the Q9100 and QX9300).

I can't do it since I am not home right now, but I know that under the RAM is a Mobo identifcation sticker IDing the P/N, revision, etc. -
Has anyone tried to get the p-7802c bios. That's also a quad if I'm not mistaken. I know it's make for Japan, but who knows??? I've tried goole-ing it but no luck so far.

Maybe some one with a Gateway Quad just dump their bios and leave it here to test out?

This explains the price premium as well. The Quads go for 500-600 more than the older bretheren. There isn't that much of a premium between the chips but a newer more expensive Quad capable main board would explain this somewhat. -
pmassey31545:
Can you please tell me where you bought your Gateway laptop with the 2.8 GHz processor? Or did you buy it and upgrade the processor later? All the specs I see on the internet say that particular model has a 2.26 GHz processor. Thanks for the info! -

The only way to have a better CPU is to upgrade it yourself, or to buy the machine second hand thats been upgraded by someone else -
Kamin_Majere said: ↑Its an upgraded CPU. There is no way to get an FX with anything but the p8400 that comes stock.

True, i tend to forget that the international versions have slightly different configurations.
I still kind of wonder why gateway doesnt sell directly through their website anymore. Offer a couple of configuration options and i still think it would sell.
To bad that all got shut down years ago, and then stopped completely after the Acer buy out
