First thing is you can just unplug and remove the battery... if nothing else works that will hard stop your system.

Have you recently downloaded anything suspicious?

Well i know it sounds old fashion, but you might want to hardpower off and then do a complete virus scan. You might have caught a bug in your system.

Anything else you have done lately that was out of the ordinary, or any drivers you have changed? Updated your BIOS?

Also check your Task Manager and find the program/process that is taking up so much of your CPU resources. That will give a decent clue as to whats happening.

No problem, hopefully it was just going buggy for a second and has fixed itself, but if it happens again and there isnt any virus/malware detected Find the offending process in the Task Manager and maybe we can find a fix for it.

How is Aion, my wife is bugging me to buy that for her, is it any good (compared to other similar games)

actually aion is my first mmo...i could never really get into world of warcraft and other mmo's...i tries them out but i just never liked the look and feel of them... but i really love the look and feel of this one....the character creation is full of depth...there is so much you could customize! the world is beautiful and extremely detailed! i haven't gotten my wings yet so i'm walking around but i'm enjoying every second of it! so far i love it! it also runs super smooth with all settings high and 4x anti aliasing. i would say go for it...

thanx again for the help man! i just hope that nothing is wrong with my laptop. i had to send it back to gateway after my hardrive failed... so now i'm really paranoid with it.lol.

ok i did the virus scan and it said that there was nothing wrong...i'm looking at my task manager and the only things that are pretty high in the processes is dwm.exe 32,992, and ,y firefox 34,596...usually my prcessors performance is at 2% to 9% while at my desktop or web browsing i dont understand why its staying at 54% and spikes to 100%..also it keeps turning itself on

dwm is desktop window management, you need that if you want vista aero (The transparent window borders/taskbar).

    Firefox is obviously.. firefox.

The 32,992 and 34,596 is the memory usage. It should actually be (for example) 34,596K, or 34.5MB.

To troubleshoot the CPU usage you'll have to see what process is doing it.

Are you choosing shut down or simply clicking the icon in the start menu? Is the start menu power button set to Shut Down?

The computer is turning on by itself also? Do you have any "wake-from" settings enabled in the BIOS?

There should be a colum for CPU usage as well as memory(i think you listed the memory values). Which process is using the most of your CPU power?

i dont have any wake from settings enabled in the bios and to shut down i usually go to the start menu and click the little arrow all the way to the bottom right hand side and click open the menu and ckick shut down... but it keeps turning back on... also how do i check which process is using the most power?

IN your task manager you should have a number of colums. The 3rd one is CPU usage (though i'm at work and using an ungodly old XP computer and i cant remember it in Vista/Win7. It should be Besides the Memory on in any case. Most of the values will be "00" but one or more will be spiking on you to cause the 54%+ usage

The computer shouldnt be able to turn itself back on... are you sure you have the power button set to Power down the unit, or is it set to Sleep/Hibernate/Restart?

Or maybe you should take the computer out back and shoot it... its enablers like you that allow skynet to be built one day :p

lmao! it just refuses to shut down...i shut it down and like 8 sec. later i'm walking away from it and it just goes right back on...its mocking me thats what its doing...i may just have to take it out back if it keeps this

i dont use the power button though i got to where it gives you the options to switch user, log off, lock, etc. and click shut down.

Have you tried calling Gateway support? They might actually have a solution here. I'm sorry man, I looked around, but I got nothing. I've never heard of a laptop doing this.

i sent it back to gateway once already for a hdd failure and i really dont wanna be without my baby for another 2 weeks...thanx for lookinga around for help gamadaya! i appreciate it! for now i'm just push the power button to turn it off than take out the power plug. i'm gonna try the recovery management thing to restore it to factory settings now...its my last resort before i consider sending it back to gateway.

I think i have a solution for your problem.

Take out the CMOS battery. I've been looking at stuff online and you might have a really weird corruption in your booter that is causing everything to act like its trying to birth Skynet.

Turn Off, Unplug, Take out battery, hold power button for 5 seconds, take out CMOS battery, wait 1 minute

Then just repeat all of those steps in reverse and your system should correct itself. At least i hope it will. I do feel like you just have a screwed up booter that you need to clear your system to start it over.

Where is the CMOS battery? Do you have to take the entire thing apart to get at it?
