My 7805u has a problem of restarting instead of shutting down when i shut it down. This sometimes even happens when i have automatic restarts disabled for system errors. This happen to anyone else?

Had exactly the same problem on my 7811. Talked to Gateway support which was no help at all since they were convinced it was a software problem. Tried complete restores and numerous other things. It would restart even in safe mode shutdown. Had to send in to repair and they said it was a motherboard problem. Still waiting on the replacement motherboard. Good Luck

Mine was doing that for awhile, but not recently. The only thing that I know of that has changed is Vista updates from Microsoft. I make sure it has shut down and not restarted before I close the lid, though.

Mine's done that, but I think I figured out why. Each time it's done that, I had a router plugged into the ethernet port. If I unplug the router it doesn't turn on.

I haven't checked the BIOS yet, but it may be Wake On Lan that's the culprit.

Just to clarify: I've had the issue where I've told Windows to shut down and it's restarted instead. It's only happened a handful of times where I've done that though. On other occasions the system has shut down, only to turn on a minute later.

Now picture this... I'm alone in a studio, packing up for a day. I turn the laptop off and see it turn off. I leave the room for a moment to go to the mens room and when I come back into the room, the system's at the Windows login prompt. :D First time it happened I thought that either someone was playing a game with me, or the place was haunted. :D

Kinda glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem, I've noticed with mine that it does not restart if it is unplugged. Luckily the only time i completely shut it down is when I'm going to school, so I just remember to unplug everything (power, all usb's, external monitor, and ethernet) and it doesn't restart. Also it hasn't hasn't done it since I put in the new Hard drive and did a fresh install of vista on the new HD

I've had this problem as well. To turn off Wake From Shutdown when your ethernet is plugged in, go to device manager, double click the Marvell Yukon Ethernet Controller, go to the advance tab, at the bottom of the property list you should see "Wake From Shutdown". Change the value to "off" and it should work...

Something you're running is preventing the system from shutting down. Mine did the same thing - I tried the Wake On LAN fix to no avail. Turned out to be some sort ofuser-made "Uberoptions" thing I'd downloaded to improve upon Setpoint. Once I got rid of that I never had another problem.

Well, to make it clear, it is true that if I disconnect the LAN cable before shutting down it takes care of the problem. This is also not a problem if I use wireless internet connection. I've changed the Wake on Lan setting on the MarvellYukon under device manager, but it doesn't solve the problem.

I want to try to change the "Wake on LAN" setting in the BIOS itself, but I could not find it in the BIOS setting. Anybody can help with that?

    Thanks,
    Iwan

I had the same problem originally, and tried a bunch of fixes. It worked for me, but I cannot remember the exact fix. I know I disabled the wake on LAN, along with the wake on Mouse option somewhere.

I think it was actually my mouse that was waking it. When I select Shutdown, as I am letting go of the mouse sometimes it moved, and that would start the restart process. There should be an option to turn off "wake on mouse" somewhere. Sorry I do not know the exact spot any longer. :(
