    Hi guys,

First, I'd like to apologize if you guys think this topic is unnecessary. I did some search with the 7805u topics out there, but I did not come with a conclusion about the crashes that some reported and the temperature.

Could you guys report your temperatures with the machine, not overclocked and without any termal paste? I'd also like to know the temperature room if possible, because here is like 30-33ºC right now, really hot.

I'm willing to buy a good notebook for gaming. I currently have a barebone with HD4650, but I will just return it because of the temps. In hard gaming I get 90ºC+!

First I fell in love with the dv7, but some were saying that their machine gets too hot, and that's one thing that I definitely want to avoid, my objetive is to have a good laptop for years, without problems.

And now I just discovered this Gateway machine for very good value (I live in another country, so the price is a little bit different here hehe), so I am again trying to search about the temperatures, and about the VGA itself.

Why about the VGA? Well, first because I've always looked for ATI GPU's, because they tend to have lower temperatures - I think. Second because of that weird amount of notebooks with failure nvidia GPU's, I think it was the 8xxx generation. So I want just to know if these 9800GTS are really reliable and cool - my main concern.

About the crashes that some people had - not with 7805u, with another model but yes with the same GPU - are they occuring in 7805u?

Well, sorry guys again for any english mistakes, and sorry for bothering you hehe.

EDIT: just to add one more question - how to identify if a gateway notebook is refurbished? Does it only come with a sticker that anyone can take out or can I identify it with some program?

EDIT2: well, I just noticed one thing that is a little bit funny. My current barebone has first Fn and then Ctrl, that's just sick for tab browsing in Firefox and of course playing games. The HP model has Ctrl at the right place, but lol, I was seeing some pics and just saw Fn at the place where it is awful.

How a gaming notebook is supposed to have Ctrl at the wrong place? So I was thinking with myself that Gateway, which is a great manufacturer, wouldn't make such a mistake, and realized that perhaps the keyboard (and W, A, S and D of course) would be a little bit to the right for comfortable use of the Ctrl key... am I wrong? Perhaps I'm just going too far hehe, what do you guys say?

    EDIT3: is it really widescreen?

EDIT4: oh man, this tread is becoming a 7805u question-thread @_@, just to point, I saw some saying that the screen is matte... is that true? I thought it was glossy. Is the screen great? Compared to the hp ones?

EDIT5: oh man... getting odd... doing another lookout, I discovered that this laptop has a pulsing fan, the GPU fan to be exact... does anyone has a video or can make one of it for me to see how bad is it?

    Thanks in advance

You are being very specific in what you are requesting for people to post temperatures. Every laptop will be different, and your max GPU temps will also depend on the load you put on the GPU, as well as many other variables in your control such as external cooling, how clean the heatsink fins are, etc.

Crashing is usually related to the display driver in use. Find a driver that works great for you and stick with it.

Refurbished computers will be listed for sale as refurbished (In the US at least). I am unsure if there are any stickers or different software included with the refurbished laptops.

The resolutions supported include widescreen yes. The screen is glossy. Quality of the screen compared to HP will need to be commented on by someone who has or has had both.

The GPU fan doesn't PULSE, when the GPU reaches a certain temperature (Has shown to be around 50°C) the fan spins up to cool it down. This is no different from any other laptop. If fan noise will bug you, you will want to buy a computer that is known to be 100% silent, good luck. If others are having problems with their fans spinning up at other temperature points or randomly and not at the correct time then that is a problem with their individual laptop. It was determined a long time ago when the 7805 first came out that the GPU fan spins up when the GPU needs to be cooled down. Mine did it too, and still does (when it reaches 50°C), if you never want it to spin up, keep the GPU under 50°C or whatever temperature the GPU is at when the fan speeds up.

Doesn't annoy me at all.. it's an important component in the laptop doing it's job..

Again.. the fan does not pulsate.. it speeds up when the GPU needs further cooling. If your GPU is running hot the fan will be on all the time and you will never hear it spin up. If your GPU reaches the temperature for the fan to speed up and it is very quiet where you are, you will hear a fan accelerate and then steady at a higher RPM than before. If your GPU doesn't reach the temperature for the fan to speed up then you will never hear it.

An mp3 wouldn't be realistic at all, not to mention YOU control the volume.
I couldnt hear anything in that link and I had my speakers turned up and holding them up to my ear.. even if I could hear it it's not going to be the same as actually hearing it when the laptop is in front of you.

You don't want temps 90°C+, but you're worried about hearing the fan...

Well, you can notice the problem at the mp3 if you hear it carefully, I think the problem is really noticed with the laptop in hands...

I understand what you said, but for example, I'm really worried to the fact that some people says that it does annoy and some say it doesn't at all at idle.

Generally my laptop is on 24hs/day, even when I'm sleeping, and the fact that even in idle it's cooler goes up really fast and down is something that could bother, but it depends on how noisy it is. I don't mind if it get's noisy when playing games, I prefer that than having high temps. The laptop seems just perfect, it has a monstrous GPU and efficient cooling (at least better than the HP ones...).

Can't I ask you guys if anyone could make a video or something like that, just to understand the problem better?

Thanks a lot and sorry for any bother

One more question: the cooling system of 7805u is exactly the same of P-7908u?

Understood. I'm asking that because I know some people that have P-7908u and saw it's cooling system, but I'm considering to buy a P-7805u, that's why I would like to know if their cooling system are identical.

I saw the "pulsing fan" P-7908u, if the P-7805u works exactly the same so it's not a big deal and I'll definitely buy it hehe...

Oh yeah, i believe ever FX after the 68xx series uses the pulse cooling system.

Not sure having never bought one, but i believe most will come with all of that. The box might be different, but all of the manuals and what not should be included

Got it, I'm a little cautious because I think the gateway one is selling is refurbished, even though he says it isn't. Too bad it only comes with a sticker indicating it's refurbished and can be easily replaced.

People, does the fact that it doesn't come with CD and manuals - only in digital version, inside the notebook - and it does not come in the original box - also, only 3 months guarantee means that it is refurbished? I'm confused because the vendor in an EXTREMELY legit person, and he says that the product itself is original, and not refurbished in anyway... The reason that the notebook comes like that, I think, is that the product is a smuggling - or bootleg, I don't know for sure the word in english.

    What do you guys think?

If its not refurbished ask him why there's only a 3 month warranty.

I'm pretty sure Gateway has a 1 year (limited) warranty on new laptops, someone correct me if I'm wrong but there's no way I would have bought my laptop new with a 3 month warranty.

Guys, a new question regarding Gateway and Best Buy notebooks:

Well, there's this guys who is selling a new one. He claims he bought at Best Buy - he has the invoice.

As I want to really know if it is in fact brand new, and not refurbished, I'd like to know if Best Buy's invoice has anything that indicates the notebook is refurbished, or it it does in fact sells Gateway refurbished notebooks.

    Thanks!

Just one more question: Ii found another guy selling and he says it has 3 year warranty, which is very good... but can I see on Gateway website if the model really has that much time of warranty?

How could I do that? Through Serial Number?

    Thanks!

    Anyone there?

EDIT: one more question - the guy is trying to pass the serial number for me, but the numbers are not getting accepted on Gateway's website, he bought from Best Buy.

He just tried the command wmic bios get serialnumber at DOS and it says INVALID. Can you guys confirm this to me?

    Thanks!

But it seems he just can't get it right. He passed 3 different numbers to me, none of them are the serial. I asked for him to input the comand in DOS, but it says INVALID - even my 15 year notebook was able to do that -, would you guys kindly try that in DOS, just to see if he is not lying about the serial number for me?

    Thanks

EDIT: about Best Buy... he took a shot of the bottom of the notebook. Now I can see the serial, it's everything fine, but when I input the serial - 22 digit number - at the website, it says that it doesn't have information about the warranty, when in fact comes with 3 years...

Who got one from Best Buy here? Could you try the serial at the site and see if it provides info about the warranty? Also, when you buy any notebook at Best Buy, does it come with a number, confirmation, any sticker on it?

    Thanks!

EDIT: also, it does not come with any sticker on it...

EDIT: Best Buy does in fact sell refurbished notebooks...

Wow directeuphorium, 100 is a lot high hehe...

Guys, I'm just reposting this here because I think I won't get any replies at the Dummy Guide forum (originally posted at the Notebook Screen Guide topic).

    ---------------

Nice guide, helped me a lot!

    From another topic:

Well, got a question: I saw some people say that the screen loses quality if it's not in it's native resolution. I mean, if a laptop monitor is 1920x1200 17" resolution, if you use 1440x900 on it, it won't get the same quality as one that has a native resolution of 1440x900... that's right or just plain wrong?

And there's any problem if my resolution on Desktop is 1920x1200 and when in-game I change to 1440x900? It will be the same as one as a native resolution of 1440x900, right?

If I plan to game everytime on lower resolutions (1440x900) than my native (1920x1200, because newer games got very detailed to play on that res) will I get worst quality than one that it's native resolution is 1440x900? In this case, should I get the 1440x900 screen?

Also, I saw a user commenting that 1920x1200 screens are less bright than for example 1440x900, the laptop I'm aiming for has a LG 1920x1200 LED (P7805u Gateway's), should I get concerned?

    Thanks in advance!

EDIT: well, could you guys inform me if the screens of the P-7805u and P-7908u are LED? The LG 1920x1200 is also LED, or not?

People, I'm a little bit between the P7805u and the P7908u...

The main thing is because the P7805u will have the 1920x1200 screen, which is just formidable, but for a bit more I could get the P7908u...

I was doing some research to find out how well the GTX260M is in comparison of the 9800M GTS, and in my opinion is not a much big deal that I thought it was, am I wrong?

I did some monster research through google and here, but couldn't find a nice topic (like an official one) showing gaming benchmarks... could you guys help me?

    Thanks!
