i'm not sure which one will give me a better performance for gaming. the ssd drive sounds appealing because it will speed everything up like load times and rumors stating that the ssd will get rid of micro stutter...as for ram i'm really not sure what type of performance increase it will give me for gaming...any suggestions?

Do you actually use all 4GB of RAM? Doubtful...

The SSD would be a better upgrade.

The SSD would give you a great boost to your user experience, its pretty amazing having everything available almost instantly as you select it. I would put my SSD on par with my x9000 as the best upgrade i have ever done to a system.

The 8gb of ram... well unless you run ALOT of virtual machines or are heavy into photoshop editing (and not little pics i'm talking about huge 1200MB+ files) i doubt you system will do anything with the RAM but use it for cache to store common files/programs you use. Which will help a little, but nothing that you will notice.

kool than the ssd it is...i have never used all 4gb's of my ram...

btw kamin you have an ssd and i would just like to know how your gaming experience has been with it? i get micro stutter and from what i've been reading on some forums and websites is that the ssd may eliminate the stuttering because the ssd can read data way faster than a hdd. they said that the only thing really holding my system back right now is my hdd.

I load games ALOT faster, but actual in game preformance i havent noticed any increases form the SSD. The Drive will load textures and data into the RAM, but i'm not sure how much that will ever effect play because with 1.5-2GB of system ram dumping the info into the 1GB of vRAM your speeds at that point are far beyond what even a 'huge' SSD RAID will be able to produce.

But I fully support SSD's as long as you get one of the good ones (intel/indilinix/samsung controllers) you will be good to go and the only problem will come if you ever have to use a system with a normal mechanical HDD it will seem VERY slow :p

The 160GB G2 Intel is one of the top SSD's right now. I would buy one in an instant if i had a good deal or need for a first SSD.

I run the Supertalent Ultra Drive (128GB Indilinix based drive) its got the fastest speeds for through put and does everything i've asked of it. Intel beat me on 4KB reads/writes though and if my drive ever becomes fragmented due to me filling it up and shuffeling things around then i will start to suffer from degradation (though this will be fixed whin Win7 becomes official and Trim is offically supported by the drive)

Intel does great because they work on the idea that everything is eventually going to become fragmented so they have HUGE read speeds, and HUGE 4k IOPS (which is small 4kb file reads) which gives them amazing random read/write capabilities.

Samsung has great sequential reads and writes but the slowest random preformance (though still 10+ times greater than a hard drive) But they offer the best priced storage and preformance you can get a 256GB Samsung drive from dell for like 490, so if i ever buy something like an alienware computer then i would more than likely just get two of those and RAID them

So honestly they all have pluses and minus'. I would go with the intel though, it should give you a great boost.
One fun fact is that a SSD will finish most hard drive writes that the OS requires for maintainence before the mechanical drive has finished its 15+ms access lag. :p

    No worries.

Yeha install your OS and Applications on your SSD. Put all of your media files and data on the HDD. Thats what i do. You should be able to put your games on the intel easily (unless you have like 120GB worth of games then i would only install a few at a time)

Not a guru by any stretch, just been on here a while and picked up on things. But thanks for the ego boost :)

The screen looks nice. I cant remember if its that one or the WU1 that everyone was using, i dont think it really matters though as just about any panel over the stock 1440x900 should give you a beneficial upgrade.

You'll enjoy Win7, i couldnt believe how much better it ran than Vista (and i really enjoyed vista) More powerful with a smaller hardware foot print, its pretty much a win/win OS

Just a heads up, OCZ just released a new firmware for its vertex line (agility update is coming), it will allow trim to work in windows 7 automatically. So there wont be a need to use their wiper tool to clean up the drives. I am thinking of picking up a couple more vertex drives for my work computers, I love the one in my 6860fx, especially with the windows 7 rc installed.

would you say that the vertex ssd is better than the intel x25 astron?

It will be the same as my UltraDrive. Its a very solid drive and i would recommend it. The intel will tend to be faster when its all said and done, due to it having such great random small writes. But IMO the indilinix controllers drives (Ultradrives and Vertex) are a great purchase and i doubt you would ever be disappointed with them.

If there is a Firmware update that natively supports Win7 Trim, then its really going to be a coin toss as to which drive will be better though.

So really either will be a great choice.

Not worth the money, they acted like it was amazing, but it so barely out preforms the normal Indilinix and they want alot of premium money for it.

Probably a good idea. Not to down the Vertex Turbo, but the intel just really is that good of a drive. I like the Vertex/Ultradrive, but most of the other variations are gimicks and the intel pretty much gives you what you paid for... solid and fast preformance

G.Skill Falcon SSD is a good alternative. I have a 128GB one as my primary HDD.
