    just tried overclocking it..
i get about 8700 with stock speed on 3d benchmark 06.
overclocked my gpu to 710/950/1750, i got 8550..
so i stepped down a little bit.. still 8400ish..
so i set it down to 650/800/1600.. bam.. 5427.. the heck..

i set to default and restarted the system.. got 8700-ish score again..
darn.. and games were crashing more often when i overclocked gpu..
    what the heck.. -`-
this is almost same as my desktop with gtx 295.
whenever i overclock, i get lower score.. when i was using 8800gt,
overclocking actually improved my score so this is kinda dissapointing..
or is 3d benchmark 06 that's measuring things wrong?

Usually. 3dmark06 is a nice program but sometimes its retarded.

When i first installed my x9000 (6860) using stock drivers i pulled a massive 5344. I was a little shocked as i should have almsot instantly had a 10K+ machine. And the higher i clocked it the worse it got.

After a bit of tweeking and driver changing i was able to pull 10216 once (i guess) 3dmark06 realized the "actual" hardware i was using.

Sometimes the program is just weird. With ALOT of tweeking and a very good cooling system (house at 60 degrees + desktop fan cooler) i can pull over 11K with a large OC to the vid card. But thats just stupid to do all of that for no IMO gain. So i stuck with DOX 180.70 drivers and down clocked my vid card for better temps and i havent looked back sence.

Basically ignore the benchmarking scored. With a stock 78XX you will pull 8600-8900 no amount of crazyness will get you much further than that. Benchmark numbers are cool, but dont get obsessed with them as your not going to break any records with a gateway ;)

Windows XP gets you nearly 800 points, best tweak I did. Overclocking the GPU was only worth a couple hundred.

do games or other cpu demanding program run any faster on xp?
what's your cpu 3d mark 06 score on xp? i've got about 2000 cpu score.
actually, i need more cpu power than gpu power right now and that's why
i placed order on t9600. those darn ps2 emulator runs crawl on this
    laptop.

If games are crashing and/or 3DMark is resulting in lower scores, this usually means it is clocked too high. Not all GPU's overclock equally. Lower the clocks a bit on the overclock and try again.

All things being equal, an overclocked GPU should always out-bench a non-overclocked GPU. My guess is, the card is overheating and or becoming unstable and this takes away from its ability to performs its job in a timely manner.

i was monitoring temperature too. highest it got was 76c during my tests which is around same temperature as stock one.
of course, that horrid 5000-ish score happened when gpu clock was 650, not 710.

Games are frequently faster on XP, I haven't really run much on it to test the theory but every other computer I've owned most things were quicker on XP due to the lower system overhead. I'll have to check my laptop and see if I saved the score, I didn't log it in my ORB but I think I might have screen shotted it.
