I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge on how to overclock the 9800m, I am currently trying Riva Tuner although I would prefer nTune, it is stuck as installed and the previous install bsod'd all the time so i removed it and after trying to install it simple sees it as still being there and doesnt do anything.

My Goal is to hit 10k in 3d06 running higher clocks across the board, you guys have any ideas? Or does Riva Tuner not even work becuase of the 2d/3d toggles?

for graphics card OC use Nvidia Performance aka nTune. vers 6.03 link
is somewhere on this board. use Nvidia system monitor to see your clocks and temps.

ok yes lots of people have over clocked this card on this pc.... also do some research on the forum before you make a thread.... but no riva tuner does not work and im not sure if ntune even works or not but use nvidia system tools found here http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_system_tools_6.03.html but i dont think u can get 10k because the cpu is holding you back and also not enough power from the power adapter the highest ewrecker got was like 9600 and i dont think any one else beat him with the stock cpu...

E-wrecked got 9,638 with a stock CPU and over 11k (I think) with his extreme chip. I only got 9,653 with a stock CPU using E-wrecked's clock speeds (thanks again E-wrecked :) ):

Search up on this forum as there are a lot of valuable information on overclocking the 9800m GTS such as download the Nvidia Performance (nTune) that Touristo and Jhr mention, disabling the powermizer which prevents the downclocking of the GPU ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=261929), and installing the latest PhysX drivers. Also, many people use the Dox's customize driver and Xfastest driver to achieve the higher clock than the standard Nvidia drivers. I'm using the Dox 178.24 (you can refer to this link: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=314693)

Well i cant get to nTune as i said because the first time i installed it and ran it i got the bsod error, it was the 5 series, so i got rid of it and today got the 6.03 tools, but it says ntune is still installed and the installation stops for performance. There is a registry key attatched to it but i cannot find the solution. I have deleted and disabled every thing ntune i could find on this pc even in registry and safe mode and still it says it is installed which inhibits my ability to install the new version. IF ANYONe has the solution to this problem please let me know x.x

    Driver Cleaner Does NOT work.
It is not in the Add/Remove List
It is not in Program Files
    CCleaner Will not Work.

    Ideas? x.x

download driver sweeper from guru3d and clean up all nvidia cr4p.
    better done from safe mode.
reinstall gpu driver, reboot. install ntune 6.03.

you should be good that way.

Installing new driver simplified, just try and keep up. You mention registry, so I assume you're somewhat computer literate.

Go to your vista control panel, Programs add/remove section, uninstall Ageia/Nvidia Physx, do not reboot. Uninstall NVIDIA Control panel and anything relating to it, dont reboot. Uninstall NVIDIA drivers, and don't reboot.

Now go to your device manager, and expand display adapters. Right click and uninstall display adapter. Now you get to reboot. Reboot into Safe Mode. F8.

Check device manager, Standard VGA should be installed as your vid driver. If not, uninstall and reboot into safe mode again.

Run Driver Sweeper, and *only* clean NVIDIA/Ageia PhysX drivers. and NVIDIA Display Drivers..dont touch chipset, or any others. Reboot.

Your rig should still only have Standard VGA as your Video drivers in device manager. If not, repeat above process.

Now, depending on what driver you intend to use.. I still STRONLGY suggest Xfastest - in which case you would extract the Xfastest .exe and then go to the extracted directory..and just run setup.exe. Xfastest will handle the rest. Oh, and if it asks about an unsigned driver, just tell it to Continue with install and ignore warning. After this, install the newest PhysX and also the NVIDIA Control Panel. All of which are available in the sticky thread above. Once installed, if Xfastest..you will reboot to an error about nvsvc.dll or something, run msconfig, edit your startup items..and uncheck the nsvsvd.dll from running at startup. (otherwise it's annoying). When you reboot again, it will be gone. And when you run the NVIDIA control panel for the first time make sure to choose advanced settings, then half way down the option tree those advanced settings are available with accepting the EULA agreement. Now, you can OC the GPU. With Xfastest, 698/988/1798 is going to be the max safe, stable clocks, and you will be amazed by the results. Dox results, not sure..but most report you can't OC as high for stable gaming. Good luck. :)

Sorry to jack the thread but was wondering JBN; according to your screenshot 68C was the max temp you reached with the OC? What were your OC settings?

Just ran my system at 650/850/1550 not close to E-wrecked's settings and the GPU hit 83C max during 3dMark06... I am sure that temp is too high to be operating at... What would max safe operating temps be for the 9800M GTS?

Make sure you raise the back of the laptop an inch or two and make sure the vents are not blocked. It doesn't take much blockage to cause the temp to rise.

lol..edited own post. Realized 9800m GTS.

Maan..something I found out when I first began OCing.. a little OC does not go a long way. Especially with certain cards. The 9700m GTS, I experienced similar issues as yourself. I was affraid to push one clock any further. Then saw the heat rise a couple degrees. Then realized that I was just not pushing them all to where they can safely go. Another dude had his clocked 200mhz+ higher than mine. So, I went ahead and jumped out on a limb. Short of it is, I realized that clocks need big changes for big differences..otherwise there's no point. However, there's a difference between safe stable clocks..and benchmark clocks. Tell ya what.. Try running those 698/988/1798 clocks and see what your performance differences are. Your heat changes should not be noticeable as long as you have good ventilation. This section of the 7811 and the 9800, and the 7801.. this is where my expertise excels. Maybe not my spelling. So, do us both a favor..run your stock clocks and record temps and performance. Then, run these clocks and do the same. PLEASE, report back with your results. Please.

I play Crysis Warhead for a few hours and the highest temps was mid 70's like E-wrecked said. I don't believe I've ever hit over 80C even on a hooooot day.
